can't wait for this monty... i had a bunch of issues with my TFM install and hoping this will go a lot smoother this time around

For Il2 412:2.m with SAS Modact on top.
Format:  SFS + new #SAS folder to start with (50Mb).
Install time: - 10 to 20 minutes max, direct to Il2 Root directory.

No waiting, no other folders...so no issues  8)

Looking forward to CFM....Also, is there any way I can have static aircraft forward of the Angled Flight deck on Carriers...Just to make landing more interesting.

Also tried to have a Rescue Helicopter keeping pace with the Carrier about 100 m. out. Altitude 50 ms and speed 25km/hr....( Yep my take-offs and landings are that bad, bad bad]

Anyway..helicopter just crashes, no matter what I try...Is it Possible??

Yes with the Helo; good procedure and looks authentic.  However, AI Helos are not that good at holding station or very slow forward flight.  Also the early helo FMs don't come close to the Hind, the best Helo FM of all so far.

Therefore, give your AI helo a bit more forward speed and plot it to race-track close to the carrier. - This gives you a perfectly good plane-guard.  After a few circuits remove the AI helo using an out of the way DZ point.  Rinse and repeat timed for a later appearance so you have planeguard available for your recovery phase.

I gotta say - this CFM looks like one fine piece (many pieces) of work.  Shoot, the typing alone of your manual impresses me.  I took typing class back in the fifties, on a manual typewriter (non electric) and this would have taken me 'til now.  Congrats.  Anyway, I just have a couple of questions about what I have read.  First, mention is made of "adding your own mods".  Does this mean mods that you yourself have created, or is it just your way of saying "other folk's mods that aren't included in the CFM package and you would like to try/use"?  And second, does this really save disk space?  I will add this CFM (stand alone(?)) to what I already have running well currently on my PC, TFM-412 and all there is to that.  Where will it go or need to go to save space?  Sorry for my questions, and I'll admit that I understand very very little written about CFM and what you have conveyed, except what I have picked out of your manual that tells me how I will install it.  That seems to be simple enough for even one of your least knowledgeable, old users (me).  Thank you for your efforts, and all those associated with this endeavor.  Unfortunately, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again. :-[

Bob:

answer 1.  you are correct about "adding your own mods" it's what ever is not included in CFM.

answer 2.  What monty is talking about when he says saving disk space, he is referring to the size of CFM (condensed Full Monty) compared to current version of TFM 412 (The Full Monty that is compatible with IL2 1946 version 4..12.2)  If you were to start from a clean install of IL2 1946 and install CFM it will take much less disk space than the current TFM 4.12.  CFM is designed to replace TFM 4.12.  So in other words (now don't do this yet!!!!)  once CFM is released and you get it working over a clean install of IL21946 you can delete TFM 4.12 from your hard drive, hence, saving space.  But I recommend getting CFM working before you do anything with TFM 412.  Clear as mud?? :) :)

I also sent you a PM (personel message).  If you dont know how to check that, make sure your logged in and go to the top of the page and mouse click "my messages".

Thanks.  I kinda figured the saving space deal was as you explained it.  One of these days I might try to do a fresh install.  But I seem to have enough disk space so I think I might just add CFM to what I have now.  Mod things often get me into trouble and so, over time, I am trying to limit doing anything that might rock the proverbial boat.  I answered your message, at least I think I did.  My knowledge of that part of the forum has not been great.  Thanks for your info and your offer.

From reading this thread and the final manual, I thought I was clear on the CFM install requirements. As posted by SAS~Monty27, you will need 3 things before installing CFM ---> "Yep! Clean install patched to 4:12.2 with SAS Modact on top, running and ready to go - add, or check for the presence of, the 9 required SFS files from the download and you are ready for CFM!"

Unfortunately, while reading the final manual, I came across something that was confusing. On page 21 it states:'Installing CFM over any 412 with SAS Modact takes just 10 Minutes. Take your time and do it properly. It is vital to do it in the proper sequence as each set overwrites, or adds to, the content of the next one. There are in total 14 RAR files to download and install.'

After reading this I am again unsure about the CFM install procedure. The manual is beautifully done. However, I am questioning why install instructions/hints are placed on page 21, which is dedicated to 'MAP CONTENT OF CFM COMPARED TO DEFAULT 412 WITH SAS MODACT 5.3'. (CFM STANDALONE INSTALL instructions begin on page 3.)

So, can anyone shed light on these mysterious '14 RAR files'?

*Please do not take this post in the wrong manner. A manual is meant to, in part, clear up confusion about a particular subject. I read something that was confusing so I decided to ask about it.

Aviar - at the bottom of page 3 of the manual - under the heading "Inside Il2/1946 Root Directory" - line 4 states

"UnZip/UnRAR CFM-01.RAR to CFM-12.RAR + CFM_RESOURCES_01.RAR + CFM_RESOURCES_02.RAR to your Il2/1946 Root Directory. Install in this sequence and overwrite when asked."

So their appears we are now to have 12 x CFM files plus 2 CFM-Resourses files.

And thanks Monty for the big red note that SAS AI Flyables are part of CFM.  Me eyes are not what they used to be.

Thanks Creature; totally right.

The main part of the install procedure to understand is that CFM will replace your current #SAS folder.  You MUST Minus your existing one out - RENAME it to -#SAS so it will not be referenced or used.  When you are up and running with CFM you will be able to save 30Gb at a stroke by deleting the now redundant -#SAS folder.

There are now 14 CFM packages: - CFM01-CFM12 + 2 resource packages 01 and 02, to be added last.  The reason is that during the build we reduced previous dependency on UP and DBW SFS files.  There are just 9 needed now and most people already have them.  The goal with future expansions will be to remove ALL previous dependency and have it all self-contained, eventually.  This is pretty detailed work though and several teams are working on different aspects of this.

With regard to content in the manual; this is meant to suppliment the main thread (which isn't up yet obviously...).  Install Procedure will be laid out very clearly step by step.  There are four steps and it is a speedy process. The extra hints were put there as reminders, just to get into the right frame of mind and help some of the information to stick.  Don't worry though, it is real easy and fast, we will post it very clearly, light the touchpaper and stand back!  ;D

BTW, manual updated again, this really is the last version I think...

Hey Monty,

I'm trying to download the manual to my IPAD so I can take it on the road with me.  Safari wont open the mediafire link and the .pdf is to large to email.  Any ideas.

c

going to try and answer my own question here, LOOK OUT!!!!

The way I figured how to do this is to:

ON YOUR DESK TOP

-create an account with adobe if you don't have one.  Once that is done do the following:
-go to acrobat.com
  -click sign in
-from the drop down click Acrobat.com

-click upload file near the top right on a cloud icon with an up arrow in it.
-find where you EXTRACTED the CFM USERS MANUAL.PDF on your hard drive and doulbe click it.

once the .pdf is uploaded go to your IPAD

ON YOUR IPAD

-download the Acrobat Reader APP if you don't already have it.
-open the APP
-Turn on Mobile Link and sign in if prompted
-select Acrobat.com from the left side menu and you should see your CFM USERS MANUAL.PDF
-select the CFM USERS MANUAL.PDF
-once open tap the top of the screen and select the "send" icon.  it will be second icon from the right, next to the magnifying icon
-select "Open in.."
-another small window will open and you will have a few choices.
  -select open in IBOOKS.

Once it is opened in IBOOKS you know have an off line copy of the manual.

I hope this helps and gave you the right steps.  If I missed anything or for petesake there is an easier way to do this, by all means correct me..

BTW, manual updated again, this really is the last version I think...

Personally, I would I would give each released manual a version number. With a project this big, the manual is bound to change (as you can see). Having several versions of the manual floating around the internet all with the same filename is something you may want to avoid. Just sayin'.... ;)

Thanks for the response to my earlier post.

Aviar has a point

With all the work your doing, you are bound to keep revising the manual.

If I can make another recommendation.   I worked a little with technical publications (very little) but one of the things I learned about constant revisions is to put a side bar line (vertical line) next to the paragraph or sentence that is new to the manual.  It makes for an easy scan when you have already read the manual.  I was in the process of asking you about this when I sent you the message on trying to figure out how to download the manual to my IPADSmile

You may have already done something like this already.  I'm not sure as I'm trying to get them on my ipad to compare them.  If you have just ignore this and ban me for a day:) :)
