My treatment of the Moon
« on: April 27, 2014, 06:44:52 AM »

Now available for download.

I recently downloaded a mod here (I forget the author's name, for which I apologize) which supplies all the Moon images at high resolution. I liked the result, except that, like the original images, they were too large and too dimly greenish-yellow. Compared to the real life 1/2 degree diameter, it was appearing as about 3X too large in diameter. I didn't want to go with an in-game 1/2 degree, because at wider FOVs the thing would be just a few pixels across. I compromised with a larger-than-true diameter of about 1.5X.

I simply increased the canvas size by a factor of two, which increases the black space surrounding the Moon. This alone would do the job, but I didn't want the larger textures, and moreover the Moon need not be at telescopic resolution anyway. So I halved the pixel array (in width), which results in a same-size .tga but with a half-sized Moon contained within--quite sufficiently detailed, still.

The dullness was addressed by boosting brightness significantly and reducing contrast somewhat. The color was also adjusted to neutralize (or at least diminish) the greenish-yellow pall.

Now in the game at night it looks like you're gazing at a sunlit Moon up there, not a yellow cheese. ;)

hey mate, some interesting stuff you are doing.
i recommend that you rather post your stuff in the Visuals section, as some of this is a bit advanced for the 'newcomers' for which this section is meant.
in the Visuals/Effects section would be ideal.
let me know if you agree, and i will then move these threads of yours to that section, as well. ;)

Malone,
Indeed, do go ahead and move anything to where you deem appropriate.

I kind of figured that as a relative newbie at modding, who's doing nothing like as advanced as some of the geniuses around these parts, I might be best corralled here 'til I really know what I'm doing. And I thought the other beginners could stumble along with me as I explain what I'm flailing away at.

As an aside, I sure wish all modders adopted the methodology/mindset of a programmer, for whom documentation in source code is a mantra. Legion are the mods with little or no clues given as to what's doing what. And so the community is to no small extent having figure things out over and over, reinventing the wheel, as it were. Surely any modder must realize their work is not the last word, and that others will want to tweak things to taste. In going through effects mod packs, I've had to expend tens of hours just working out which effect does what. As I divined the answers I've inserted comments into files identifying their purpose. If such had been done by the creators, how much easier would have been my lot. Anyone 'inheriting' my stuff will have an easier time of it.

But the pleasure of figuring things out is delicios reward, and to a good extent compensates the time involved..

I should write up a brief 'guide' detailing my findings, and post it. I haven't thought to do so thus far because of some outstanding questions. I do like to be at least reasonably thorough, and not leap into the fray half-cocked. Three quarters, maybe. ;)

Cheers!

we really appreciate the stuff you are doing, i wish more members would start experimenting by themselves ;)
many of the things you mention is stuff that we have been discussing ourselves, with regards to making life easier for all, and we hope to address this in the months to come.
this is really a newbie section, for guys who are struggling with basics such as installing, and so forth.
nothing wrong with what you are doing here, but slightly more advanced than the real 'basic' issues ;)
