... episode 4 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns flying down river Somme, reaching Amiens.

Leaving Abbeville behind, our formation turned into something rather chaotic...

During the relax phase between Abbeville and Amiens skylla took the occasion to give command to stay low again and tighten formation.
At takeoff we agreed to use 5sec fuses on our bombs so it was important for each attack group to rush in within half of that time in order to avoid the detonation blast of preceding flight members.
Since we (always) take skylla's commands serious, we've tightened formation and went back on deck again:

Reaching Amiens.
Slightly left to the cockpit frames of skylla's plane, in the haze you can see the Amiens Cathedral, our point of reference for attack:

Wow!

That is close, Mad ..
I always had to focus on the horizon / my instruments and hardly looked around .. this seems to have saved me from the fear of a crash :P

very precise flying from all the clowns! And a wonderful presentation .. thank you very much :D

I Always focused to your right wing,  I tried to keep the distance but sometimes I got too close, but I still could prevent to crash into you. That picture what you linked is one of this moments :D

It was a fine and organised mission, We all listened and fly by your commands I think I can say that we really acted like those guys in 1944... So it was a really fine and memorial mission.

... episode 5 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns reaching the target area in Amiens.

There we are at Amiens.
The reference point, the Amiens Cathedral, is clearly visible (top center of the image), the river Somme is doing a hard right hand turn here, this is our "pop up point":

At this point we have to leave our low flight level and pop up to find the railway station which is slightly to the left of our course.
This "pop up" manoeuvre is necessary to clearly identify the target and to align the attack properly.
At low level we'd have to drop the bombs more or less blindly, which is no option here since part of the order is to perform a precise attack, with as little collateral damage as as possible.
We don't want to hit the frogs after all, do we?

Target in sight, bomb bay doors open: Our leader skylla.
Get the party started!

The Clowns bombing their target: German supplies in the Amiens railway station.

Our leader skylla is the first to attack, bombs away!

No. 2, Loku's bombs, split seconds before impact:

From Storebror's point of view, first impacts, further attackers incoming:

Thanks max.
Conky (Sillius Sodus as he's called here on our boards) really did a magnificent mission.

On we go with episode 7 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns further bombing their target: German supplies in the Amiens railway station.

Further clowns rushing in, releasing their deadly load. This is gerula, with 5 other Clowns (skylla, Loku, bomberkiller, Mad and me) in the background:

...and this is me, going in low. Note bomberkiller crossing in the background (above my plane) and his bombs falling (under my right wing pylon):

My bombs went in perfectly "skipping" as supposed, right on their way to a direct hit:

Thanks traskf53 :)

On we go with episode 8 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns finished their primary target.

During the attack run we unfortunately had to figure that our C.O.'s warnings about the Luftwaffe Airfield of Amiens weren't fantasy.
Gerula got caught by a Kraut with a 109 first:

Nevertheless, our mission was a great success at first glance.
All that was left of the Amiens railway supplies was total devastation.

Only at second glance it becomes obvious that our secondary mission goal, keeping collateral damage as small as possible, failed.
The frogs will hate us.

Indeed Conky, roasted Kraut all over :D

On we go with episode 9 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns running back home.

Loku was the only one who did the long right hand turn after attack and therefore visited the Kraut's Amiens airfield (see background).
AAA fire was heavy so Loku turned out to be one of our M.I.A. comrades.
Another one who was lost without a trace was bomberkiller. We're still checking our records for incident reports.
This is where Loku was seen for the last time, passing Amiens airfield under AAA fire:

Gerula got damaged during the 109 attack and had to make his way back home with an oil leak.
He made it, but his Mossie had to face a second life as tin cans for baked beans:

Having ran along the river Somme, we finally reached the estuary again, just to discover with frightening that the Krauts got alarmed meanwhile, shooting at us from the patrol boats which were hidden among the fishing boats. Skylla got hit and suffered a fuel leak, but he made it back home without further damage:

... episode 10 of "Mosquito Strike Amiens".
All images available in 4K resolution on click as always.

The Clowns crossing the channel on their way back to RAF Shoreham.

After having crossed the french coast we've had some time to relax.
We took that opportunity to check each other's plane status, just to figure that all of us had battle damage somewhere...

Finally after having crossed 2/3 of the channel, our fighter boys met us. This is Loku:

Despite having fighter cover now, some enemies came in by surprise and made it to the Mossies.
Here two Bf 110 engage Storebror:
