BK's pilot skins do look even more disturbing if you place them in jets (click pictures to enlarge):

dirty grin:

Some more screenies, this time it's from last sunday's FAC session.
This is mission "Italy 3rd September '43 blue", starring: Gerhard "BK" bomberkiller, tail number 9.
Let's follow Gerhard to a couple of sorties... click for full size images if desired...

Italy '43 is definitely not a mission for the feint hearted. You're playing blue side, italian air force, and you have to scramble off your base immediately because enemies are coming in from the very first minute and since they approach at 5000ft+, you have to get your bums up in time or you'll be dead meat once the allied start to strike your airfield.
All of this makes things a little crowdy at the beginning of the mission, this is a good example when Gerhard tries to shave my skin (I'm Mr. Spock in the Macchi 205 few centimeters behind Gerhard on this picture):

Anyway, Gerhard managed to get through and took off successfully, even though his C.O. claimed that he wasn't respecting runways:

Up in the air, after a minute or two the first wave of Spitfires started to attack our scrambling forces right away.
This first wave is quite hard to handle. Even though most of the AI pilots have little experience, few of them are aces and they do a damn good job in leading their wingmen in the fight.
Here we can see a pair of Spits picking up Gerhard's tail...

...and while Gerhard managed to shake them off a couple of times, they always regained advantage and finally Gerhard lost sight of the pair when he went through the clouds, a situation hardly to survive when you have an ace on your tail. This ace found him, picked him up and scored a PK immediately. Note the wingman struggling to follow his Ace leader through the fight:

Gerhard now became a little angry, scrambled again and entered the fights which meanwhile have reached the blue base.
He managed to get on the six of another spit but then... dammit! AAA stole the kill:

Before Gerhard could even get rid of his anger, a couple of Hellcats rushed in with two catching Gerhard by surprise. He had to perform desperate evasive maneuvres in order not to get shot on the B&Z attack runs:

Lucky enough, mak8188 joined the fight and gave us this "special" type of formation flying between enemies:

Both mak8188 and Gerhard managed to turn the tide and proceeded from formation flying to formation shooting. Not suited for imitation...

Gerhard eventually scored the first hit...

...and the deadly one too:

While mak8188 turned away, the Hellcat's wingman was bent on revenge but fell victim of another AAA trickshot before he could reach Gerhard:

Gerhard finally decided to end up this sortie with an attack on a B-24 bomber squadron crossing the blue base, but he had to face the fact that scoring hits on bombers can have two sides:

...to be continued.

I have enjoyed following your adventures. These images really capture the sometimes chaotic nature of air combat in those days! Like gangs of thugs with clubs ambushing each other.

We should do a Battle of Britain tribute flight with a Lancaster, a Spitfire, a Hurricane, and a Halifax. How does that sound guys?
