I hope somebody with technical knowledge can clarify this, because if Hamm is right, I would share his concerns.

I wouldn't say I'm knowledgeable, but I've done some research and never heard of it being a strain on the monitor. The video card will render the signal at your monitors resolution. It does tax the GPU, but not in a dangerous way. It is identical with basic full screen super sampling AA... nothing weird.

Thanks rruff, that's how I understood it. I can say about my own card, a 660ti, that it downsamples my game at 2880x1620 without any alarming spikes in GPU temperature.
