Path's of Hate - Animation
« on: June 21, 2014, 10:20:40 AM »

"Paths of Hate" is a short tale about the demons that slumber deep in the human soul and have the power to push people into the abyss of blind hate, fury and rage.

Directed by: DAMIAN NENOW"

It's pretty awesome. 8)

Here's where I first saw it, with Aces in Exile by Sabaton.

Enjoy. 8)

Animation: 5/5
Writing: 3/5
Historical accuracy: 2/5

I have mixed feelings about this animation. I definitely like the way the aircraft move in the animation, they clearly used some simulator to coreograph the thing instead of just trying to move the models through imaginary air in a 3D program like the Dogfights series does (which, predictably, results in completely implausible aircraft movements).

On the other hand I didn't really like the time lapse sequences, which made it look like the aircraft kept fighting in badly damaged state, with very low fuel and ammo, for what seemed like several hours, doing a lot of vertical maneuvering, when they look like they could barely fly straight and maintain altitude.

Then there is the matter of really weird aircraft match-up and incorrect 3D models, as well as the location.

The match-up is a Bf 109 C-3 or D-3, against a somewhat dubious Spitfire which seems to have the basic features of an early Mk.IX: Two underwing radiators and rounded vertical stabilizer, which would mean it's a Mk.IX converted from a Mk.V, Mk.II or even Mk.I - however it seems to have 4x20mm Hispano cannons installed which is definitely non-standard for a Mk.IX (although possible if it's an experimental testbed variant).

Additionally the placement of the Spitfire's cannons is incorrect as they are too far outboard.

But whatever variant of Spitfire it is, it would hopelessly outclass the Bf 109 C/D-3 it's supposedly fighting against on even standing. It could make sense if the planes ended up somehow meeting with Spitfire already having some serious damage, but the match-up is still very, very unlikely to ever have happened.

Then there's the matter of the environment to consider - the planes seem to be fighting on a mountainous area with some open water lake or river. This would basically mean the video takes place after the invasion of Normandy, when the RAF had established operations on continental Europe and the flight range of the Spitfire could have taken it somewhere over the proper mountain ranges of Europe. Alps, Apennines or Pyrenees would fit the bill, I suppose. But the timeframe of winter 1944-1945 makes the presence of a Bf 109 C-3/D-3 even more ludicrous.

Finally, the premise of fighter pilots being piloted by zombie demon monsters seems unlikely. I know the Nazis had interest in occult, but I don't believe either side actually operated fighter squadrons manned by the undead.

Joking aside, my interpretation of the video is that it could be a nightmare of a veteran fighter pilot - on either side of the conflict. Or it could be just the regular symbolic for how awful war is. But overanalyzing aside - I liked the film, even with its flaws, mostly because of the coreography and animation of movement.

I just think it should be mandatory for any warplane film maker to consult some warplane nerds to check if their writing makes sense in historical context. 8)

Think the "about the video" was posted up there....   :-X

Art is always subject to interpretation. The creator's interpretation is not necessarily the only correct one.

yes, but reading about an artwork is still necessary for any correct interpretation.  ;)

VISUAL/ARTISTIC CONCEPT - “Paths of Hate” is a film filled with spectacular and visually-attractive scenes of aerial fight scenes. In its construction, particular narration and, most of all, in its innovative and technically-advanced stylization of the images based on 3D graphics, it resembles an action comic book put in motion.
Having talked to Tomek Baginski I tried to set the world of “Paths of Hate” in a highly stylized artistic convention. In 2006 the first trailer was produced, it was at the same time a technology test. Comic-book stylization hit the nail on the head. I decided that the drawing-like line ideally fits the surreal duel scenes and gives the film freshness and distinguishes it from among photo-realistic 3D animations.

Let's all calm down and finally come to a conclusion that it was a UNIQUE and KICK ASS animation with IL-2 FB sound effects and may not be realistic, but is COOL. 8)

The making of you can see here in this video captured at the Siggraph 2011.
Where the director Damian Nenow explains about where his inspiration came from, cloud simulation, 3D rendering of the cockpit etc.:

To me 'the making of' are usually more interesting than the actual film.  :D

It looks like they used a simulator but the studio created everything themselves.

seen and re-seen.
have similar feelings like herra, like: "the dude donno the first thing bout spits n emils" "go home read a f'n book"
5 digit ammo counter... 99.999 shots of 7.7mm? Ugh?!!

But i pushed that aside, and focussed on the rage, on the "DIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE" aspect.
In that sense, i would love the Spitfire Pilot to change his Crate for something Polish, a PZL-11. Or alternatively to bear a polish marking on the Spitfire.

The way its done tells me there were people involved that do fly real or virtual.
That the inaccuracies and caricaturizations (plane features, damage model, FM) were deliberately placed to catch your attention.

Because the only Nation i know about that Fought with the described RAGE and with the Wish to Kill Persons, The only Nation who wanted to go f'n NUTS on the germans, to "torturedismemberkill" the Aircrew, rather than destroy the planes, were the Poles.
maybe other Countries, who were occupied had similar attitudes - or more determined, focussed, enraged individuals.  Might be.

It is an animation about rage.
About determination, about losing all good senses and hope for peace...
Because once the decision has been made to carry the rage and Fury, to carry and nourish it from our darkest resources... then we are doomed to be consumed by it.

Look at the Movie again.
When the two dudes run out of ammo, they just head off into two different directions.

BUT
That is the moment where they ask themselves: was this it? was this worth it? I foutght toe and nail, for no decisive victory? Constructing Factories and Planes, Military Training of Pilots---- and we can not get anything for all that effort?

BOTH
decite that no - they need to turn back and chase the other guy some more, hoping to find a way to defeat the other.

FACE TO FACE
they come - once more, once and for all they have decided to go the Path of Hate, of rage, of destruction.

This shit goes deeper than Spit9 vs 109Caesar. Look beyond the Image.

Look in the Mirror to understand.

IMHO the editor choose not to use historical accuracy in an animation like this because he wanted to underline drama, action and the denigration of war.
And also he wanted to use SYMMETRY.
He couldn't achieve this 4 goals if he used historical accuracy.
