Well,

This is probably a very talked about topic regarding maps.
I am wanting to gather different methods from people who have been able to achieve the above successfully.

We all know this first method

0 rgb rivers painted on to map_h
This can lead to a great canyon effect and not very convincing especially if you are dealing with mountainous terrain or rolling hills.
Although it is good for very flat low lying areas and near coastal areas.

1-30 rgb rivers painted on map_h
I read in a thread that Boomer pointed out that rivers can be painted from 1-30 rgb . I presume that the painting would be to your own discretion.

I have had some success at this with a map just for testing rivers way back then. I painted low lying river areas 5rgb, mid land river areas 10 rgb, Mount river areas 15rgb and country river areas 20rgb
Basically flowing down from 20rgb down to 5 rgb.
It looked really good.
I tried it on another map but was not successful as the above map.

Agracier
After painting a river on map_h I recall a method by him to soften the banks of the rivers as well.

So who else out there has some interesting methods for painting flowing rivers on map_h  8) :P

I am currently making two very long gently uphill flowing rivers for a map project. ;)

Painting rivers on
Mymap_c obviously rgb 0 not a problem ;D
map_T not a problem  :D
ed_map_t (if you want navigable rivers, not a problem)  :D
ed_m01/m02 blue colour obviously, not a problem  ;D
map_h can be a tricky little tga to deal with  8)

I do not know if my method  comes from agracier, but I solve the problem of banks at map_h this way:

1. set rivers to rgb=0, select them .
2. increase the selection by 10 to 15 pixels.
3. cut out rgb = 0 from this selection.
4. gaussian blur of the resulting selection by 3 pixels range.

If you would not set rivers to rgb=0 everywhere on map_h, you will have troubles with default bridges - you must adjust the height locally at both their ends manually, by height tool.

I reduce the raw map_C to 25% and then add map_h over it as a new layer. I then reduce opacity to say 25%. I then paint map_h pretty generously with rgb0 all around the rivers that show through from the raw map_C layer. I then delete the map_C layer. I then blur heavily the edges of the black that I just sprayed onto the map_h.

Pretty crude, but effective. And my maps have always been pretty flattish anyway - Eastern Ukraine and Western Russia. So it works.

For Uzin,
Thanks for your in put for a solved banks method using rgb 0   ;D
I recall some screens of yours many moons ago showing this method  :D

For Tomoose,
Ya i know a Monday thing  :D (while writing thinking of the bottom end of the map ha ha)

For Mandrill,
Have not heard of this way before so this method for me is a new method.

So Mandrill when you blur your heavily sprayed areas do you just use blur blur the area twice or use a gaussian blur on the edges(only that layer).Do you then bring back the opacity to normal level on the same map_h layer and save as a new map_h?:D

Cheers
