Request - Mod Correction For B5N Heavy Bomb Loadouts
« on: April 14, 2015, 12:59:27 PM »

I was wondering if one of you wonderful modders would be willing to tackle repositioning the heavy ordinance (250 kg, 500 kg and 600 kg(800kg) bombs) on the B5N2 Kate. Over time this plane has really improved - all but its loadouts. The larger, single bomb loadouts are all positioned too far back and starboard of where they should be.

For more information on the 800 kg bomb (specs and dimensions) please see.........http://japanese-aviation.forumeiros.com/t41-21-pearl-harbor-raid-soryu-s-high-level-bombers

Anyway I scoured all of my source books and that was about all I could find as an aid on the subject. I think that if the larger bombs and their brackets were moved forward and towards the middle (not interfering with the landing gear or obscuring the bomb sight windows), it will be a marked improvement over the stock arrangement. Here's to someone taking on my suggestion. :)

Thanks for your reply, Zip_Comic1!

....but I think that when I was answering you, I somehow erased your message and your corrections to the weapons files. Please accept my apology.
I also realized that this being a stock plane and buried in SFS files, how does one locate the CF_D0 files? Thanks in advance. :P

The position of the 600kg (800kg) bomb of the "B5N".

Hello, I'm Japanese.
I would be happy if you could adjust it a little earlier.
Currently this is the place.

I think this is the position around here.

B5N1- Armament Correction
« Reply #3 on: January 01, 2023, 12:01:19 PM »

Hello everyone,
I read a bit about Kate's B5N recently and found a few sentences that I put below, my request is for the B5N1 that we have in the game Thanks Gio and Mission_bug, the modification would be to add an 800Kg bomb to Kate's weaponry.

also found a sentence that suggests that the B5N1 could carry 3 x bombs of 250kg, but in the end it's hard to distinguish truth from conjecture :P.

I'd also like to Thank Mission bug and Gio for bringing this aircraft into the game, and point out that my request is not a criticism of their work, just an attempt to complete Kate's armament to be as historically accurate as possible.

https://naval-encyclopedia.com/naval-aviation/ww2/japan/nakajima-b5n.php:

a few quotes:

The B5N1 carried a forward machine gun armament for strafing an possible attack in flight, two 7.7 Type 97 machine guns in the wings. But it was not the case for all. In fact many went just equipped with a defensive armament only, a single flexible-mounted 7.7 mm (.303 in) Type 92 machine gun.

The main use of the B5N was its Type 91 torpedo carried underbelly. It was mounted under racks were fixed eccentrically, to the right-bottom of the fuselage. They could be replaced for a model supporting a 800 kg bomb (Like the Type 99 No 80 armor-piercing bomb also used by the "Val" with devastating result, but in that case, dropped in level-bombing) or two 250 kg bombs (Type 98, No 25) or six smaller 60 kg bombs (Type 2 No 6). Replacing racks however was a two hours long process to complete, which cost the admiralty dearly at Midway...

The two 250s are staggered with the left one forward. Each hangs from a single rack which looks exactly like the one on bomb-carrying Zero 21s. There are photos on page 33 of the original Maru Mechanic that show the front end of the right rack being even with the rear edge of the right wheel well. The plans show it is 765 mm to the right of the centerline and the left rack is 300 mm to the right of the centerline, the same distance as the torpedo mount.

Not sure how much help this is but, AIRCRAFT IN PROFILE NO. 141 "The Nakajima B5N 'Kate'" (Dr.M. F. Hawkins) in VOLUME 6 has two photos of B5N1s carrying 3x 250kg bombs in a what appears to be in a single line (in tandem?) under the fuselage (and a third showing the empty racks); the author notes:
"For bomb aiming he [the observer/navigator/bomb-aimer] opened small doors in the floor, offset to the left of the stores carried under the fuselage."
The alternative weapons loads are noted as
6x 60kg bombs OR
3x 250kg bombs OR
1x 800kg torpedo (carried offset to the right of the fuselage center line)
........................

Various variants of mounting bombs in the B5N:

there is also a fix for B5N2 (also works with B5N1) which moves the bomb suspension more forward, compared to the pictures seems to be more real,
Unfortunately I do not remember who was its author (I believe it was Zip_Comic1, Thank You!), I hope that he will not be offended by me for its publication:

I think it is just a simple Hook Loc number change....

The 250kg, 500kg, and 600kg ....(in my install no 800kg) are called _External Bomb02......and are on ...._ExternalDev02

I Just changed numbers ....and I came close to your location.....

Here simple fix you can do yourself.....Backup CF_D0 for both before attempting

1. Open CF_D0 mesh with notepad ....you need to do for both (JA) and (Multi1) folders

2. Change to numbers shown in red and underlined .....

800kg is existing as a Mod, but is made of old 600kg Mesh.
I converted that one to fit our new 600Kg Mesh to be the Pearl Harbour 805kg.
The Mod is still Beta. Lies hidden in my SFS Experimental Folder.
The 3x250 setup can made, I saw a Rack similar to that in the Profile,
it can be made with fiddling.
It needs 4 new Hooks, one for the Carrier and 3 for the Bombs.

Anybody jumping in helping, having better Skills, just jump in. I'm not claiming this
alone. What I have so far is a Hack of a 805kg fitted to our BAT B5N Kate, nothing more, nothing less.

But I can only promise slow progress, I must dump this Kate out and see how it goes.

Cool request btw.

Best wishes
Tobias

Thank you for your reply Tobias, I have been thinking about this request for some time now, B5N1 is a plane that has been involved in many campaigns so I think it should have historically accurate armament,
and now after your post I hope that someday it will happen,
I will keep my fingers crossed,

Okay, this B5N1 Mod uses a too off-center Rackage, the real thing looks like positions in our B5N2.
So that we have to correct as well.

I don't know much about it but even with the fix I put the bombs should probably still be moved forward,

regarding B5N2, the following requests have already been written:

Its odd how much off the B5N bomb location is when its only 1 minute research to find out where it should be, I wonder if the "wrong" bomb location is to help weight transfer for AI carrier take off.

I had fixed the bomb types for G4M and B5N (JNAF usually 30,60,250,500,800 bombs) but didn't realise how easy it was to move the racks (that forces the bomb position) by CF_D0 mesh.

You need to keep the old code name ie. 3x100 for mission compatibility even if you make it into eg. 2x250kg

Mmh, it takes longer research, although these jap blurry Pictures are no help either.
Yeah, noticed that too, can be moved more forward.

it's true, the problem is that it's hard to find good quality photographs on the Internet that would show Kate's bombs hanging up :-X.

Bombs are nice but as a B5N2 driver, I miss forward-firing 2x7.62 mm the most. To punish those Wildcats that harass me after the successful torpedo run.  ;)
Slightly off-topic, sorry.
