Map - New Guinea - Australia
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:00:44 AM »

I've seen too many episodes of 'the Pacific' too often i guess. In any case it gave me an idea for a map that, while being mainly useful for hypothetical scenarios, should be fun. It's for the area around the Torres Straights - the tip of Queensland in Australia and the adjacent part of New Guinea due north.

The map is done except for about half of the populating of villages/towns. But since the area was sparsely populated, that map populating shouldn't be too time consuming for this map. It should be finished very soon ...

It was also fun to use 3 different sets of more or less distinct textures for New Guinea, Queensland and the islands in between both. To jazz the map up, I also found a set of very evocative Japanese propaganda postcards/leaflets that were dropped over Allied lines. Quite different from the normal patriotic propaganda.

Here's a preview of the area and FMB. I shortened the distance between the 2 landmasses in order to keep the map a reasonable size and to reduce flying time over water ...

You are a great map maker mate!

I see that the right scroll bar have a lot of space under but did you think to add even some portion above?

Some bomb raid by B26 on the Sidney/Port Moresby/Lae-Salamaua and some Sakai adventures from Lae to Port Moresby can be a great deal!

cheers

I tried to get Port Moresby into the map, but it would have been just far too large ... I even shrunk the distance between NG and Australia to keep things manageable ...

But I must say that textureing this was fun and that means that more parts of that area of the world will be in make ... I've got DEMS ready for most of New Guinea, all of New Britain, Java and other parts of the Dutch East Indies ... making basic maps is not that time consuming - populating is however. That's always the big bottleneck ... not to mention fairly boring and too repetitive.

Very very nice map indeed!

I think a map of Java or Timor and the australian Northern Territories (Darwin) should be great. There is already a nice map of the Darwin area (made by Neil Lowe) but unfortunately the dutch part is very concise.

I thought at first you meant the flags and posters and titles (which is what I like most about making maps - putting in colorful items to adorn a map) ... but now I see you are referring to the embedded objects in the map.

In that case rest assured. This will be a minimal populating with not much effort spent in creating intricate towns or industrial sites or such. It will feature minimalist (fictional) airfields, a number of basic regional/native type villages and just one town of any size in Queensland ...

And as a try-out, I didn't add any 3D trees with forest textures either. I've never cared much for how they look, so this time I used very dense forest/jungle textures. When flying the effect is quite good, if I may say so ... and it allows for a greater variety in textures too, instead of a dense forest of 3D trees ...

Hi Agracier,

FFB from AAA gave me a gift a long long time ago of a map very similar to this one.

It covered more of Northern Australia.

I was learning and asking way too many questions back then annoying people a lot I'm sure.

I remember I tried to load it up a while ago but it had a few corrupt files in the folder probably from me buggering around with some of the map_t, map_c etc, when I was learning.

FFB told me that there was some data missing at the left hand corner and at the time had no idea how to replace that.

If your interested I'll dig it out from the depths and try to reload it.

If everything is ok with it I'll send it to you.

Farang - sure send it along. Upload to a file sharing site an send a download link.

I'm not sure if it's possible to fix a map that has missing data. Especially if that data has to come from a DEM ... but I'll see. Could be anything.

Hi Agracier A couple of tga map photos come up with a tga.exe  with them in Gimp they wont open up as yet.tThat freaked me out with a few of the tga map photos before, looking into this over a night or two.
On this gift map Lae is also included.
I use hotfile
Once i've got it loaded properly again will post a link up

I'll use one of your map load.ini and textures easier for you.

Initially Thailand textures were the load.ini
