I.m not sure to the font, it seems sort of Arial based, or a script of possible (19th Centuary) US basis; since it was them who forced Japan at cannon point to open up to the wider World of International Imperial/Corporate Trade, Resource & Supplies Logistics & all the associated Political Treaties of them/that around the mid 1850's.

As for a site for fonts to search through 100's/1000's of styles of font, try search in...

http://www.dafont.com/

...many styles, with many sub styles of fonts to choose from, you can spend days looking for and selecting a few fonts that look similar to an idea, and yet those selected would all appear different in aspects still, when viewed next to each other, good luck.

dafont is a good place for typefaces but I've not yet found one that matches the IJNs aircraft lettering(the best I've done so far was modifying Arial typefaces to get something similar). Someday though I may look into getting a decal sheet with the correct lettering and some how make a typeface off of that.

Beware the Marking Table above shows an unacceptable mixing of styles you need to be aware of.
Two styles of stroking, one simplified geometric and one brushed/sharp style.
Though some of the brushed types use both styles.

You can track down both correct styles in their Unicode libraries from FF66 to FFBE for both correct styles and how to redraw.
i.e. for geometric "Arial Unicode"

Hope this helps

Arial does an acceptable job but I wanted something a little more historical in a sense, plus it helps me get the hang of using adobe illustrator and is a good pet project.

somewhere on my HDD is a little proggie that allows you to create your own fonts - for example, i made one for my dad, using his hand-writing for the font.
if anyone is interested, i could dig it up and post it here....

There are various proggies out there I'll list the most famous.
First to know, some Proggies call themselves Fontcreating Software, which in turn is
nuthing more than a BMP fonter, not really ttf and fully capable Font creator.
Always read through the documentations first.
Do you have access to the glyphs, some progs are import and go only, so no
fiddling afterwards possible. You don't have access to refinements, corrections that easy.
Second, that a program is free, has usual some deeper understanding that you'll lose comfort
in creating, processing tasks.
It can turn out at Font software, that the simpler a Product is, in fact harder to understand/use.

Commercial $$$ with Demo options

Fontographer 4.1 (old version)*
Fontographer 5.2 (new revised version by Fontlab)*
The original Handbook is a large brick, from the prog first you wouldn't dare it's
needless to print more than 700 Pages, but it is needed. I never grabbed the basics.
As I was going to Type Design in my studies I came into trouble, as it was contraproductive. My prof then
told me to try Fontlab Studio instead, for a better and logical GUI/Settings structures and easy to use Tool.
400$ sincerely hilarious, older 4.1 are more expansive even at auctions, this just resembles the fact that you pay for a name,
not valueing it's real usefullness, my cents...

Since Fontographer support and development has stopped officially with 4.1
and 5.2 only saw cosmetic changes it is superceded long ago by

Fontlab Studio 5 *****
as todays industry top leading Software...
For beginners it's a too pro Tool, you end up with a prog from which you don't use 90%.
Price is kickass, some 700$, only worth if you intend to kneel behind Fontdesign deeper.
This superceedes Fontographer as it includes todays Open Type standards fully, including some smart features,
which enable fast processing, sth. Fontographer lacked by far.

Type Tool by Fontlab *****
I use to call it Fontographer how it should be, easy to use and smart
49$ worth the deal

Fontcreator *
very limited, but easier to use as Fontographer i.e.
If you have no money for FontlabStudio, but a smaller prog, go for TypeTool instead.
I wouldn't spend money on this. 90$ ???  :P

Corel Draw ***
has an inbuilt feature that allows you to create a simple (.ttf) Font based upon Vector and Pixelgraphics (bmp),
can't remember if this really wasn't a BMP fonter by simple means, I used in pre college courses
once. very, very limited by source, but good enough for private or small projects if you care to own a Corel Version

Free Font creation Tools

DoubleType
http://sourceforge.net/projects/doubletype/

FontForge
http://fontforge.github.io/en-US/

Bitmap Font Editor

https://github.com/badsector/bifed

GNU Font Editor
http://www.gnu.org/software/gfe/

Fontstruct
http://fontstruct.com/
online limited Fontcreator, it seems good for geometrical builds, but I doubt it is usefull for
deeper projects, as you can't access the settings usually u need to adjust a Font later
reminds me of a stripped off Bmp Fonter...

Horus

That's a bit to chum, but should help you all somehow.
