Kiwi's 4.09 Mods 4 Manual Modacts
« on: October 25, 2015, 07:44:51 PM »

F-86F-25 Sabre, North Korea 1952.
Flying home at 20,000ft after 4v4 in MiG Alley...

Hi fellas.  This thread started as a few companion mods inspired by SAS~Tom's excellent F-86 update thread (see here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,46792.0.html).

As is wont to happen with these things, the 'companion posts' quickly grew out of hand, so I've reposted here in this new thread, so as not to hijack Tom's thread.

If you would like to follow along with this thread, please be my guest, I hope you find something you like.  The story begins with a fresh, classic-modded, 4.09 manual modact install.  If you don't know what that is, or how to set it up, or why it should even interest you, let me know and I'll see if I can help.  My personal reason for flying 4.09 (I fly many other installs too) is nostalgia for the classic style of modding, and nostalgia for a few old-school mods that are no-longer compatible with newer versions of the game or large mod-packs like Ultrapack and CUP.  There's nothing wrong with the newer styles of modded IL-2, however the classic-modded style tends to be highly manual, and easier for the casual modder (like me) to edit himself; moreover, large modpacks can overwhelm modest hardware (like mine).  The classic style is well summed-up by the mantra of an original editor of this site, SAS~CirX - "Lite is Good".  The individual manually installed mods are smaller and more manageable, from a certain viewpoint.  Some of these classic mods are no-longer generally available and are resurrected from my own archives.  Usually credits can be found in the read-me for each mod, or are lost to time.  Where I can, I'll credit authors from memory.  If I've missed someone and you would like a credit added, please just let me know, it will be my pleasure.

Note that Tom's updates are for an UltraPack install (UP2.01).  For classic manual modding, you won't install UltraPack.  It was adapting Tom's Sabre upgrades to my manual modact install that inspired my interest in 4.09 flying all over again, and hence inspired this thread.  :)

Without further ado, the next post is transposed directly from Tom's thread, and begins the journey - by manually installing Tom's updates for the F-86 to the classic version of the Korean era SAS Migs and Sabres for 4.09 modact.  I recommend following all the posts in order for the best results, and I recommend reading Tom's thread first to get the gist of how the story starts...

Adding Tom's F-86 Updates to 4.09 Classic Manual Modact
« Reply #1 on: October 25, 2015, 07:48:22 PM »

MiG Alley, Korea, map by CY6.
Awesome afternoon's dogfighting, 4.09 modact. The F-86F looks great!

Thanks Tom! Pits and 3D updates are really nice in my much-loved 4.09 manual modact install too.  :)

For a 4.09 modact install you would want this mod first:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,3445.0.html

Be aware of a possible modact conflict with .50 Browning machine guns.  In my modact install I have the P-51Bs from here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,4665.0.html

... which require the .50 Brownings from the Hellcats here (I installed both the complete P51-B and Hellcat plane packs in my game, might as well enjoy 'em all!):

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,4666.0.html

These .50s may cause a conflict with your 4.09 Sabres (for example a 'null' message on mission loading), which I fixed in my modact install with these M3 Brownings (by CY6):

https://www.mediafire.com/?udygnjgyk1l

You will also need a 'sound and gun mod', for example this classic:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1496.0.html

------------------------------

I've decided to have just two Sabre models in my install, the F-86A-5 with the early slatted wing, and the later F-86F-25 with the famous fixed 6-3 wing, wing-fence, and all-moving tail plane.  I just remarked out the 'F-86F25E' ( inserted // ) in my air.ini here: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/Files/com/maddox/il2/objects/air.ini

I also changed my plane's in-game name to "F-86F25L             F-86F-25 Sabre, '52\u02DC" here: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/Files/i18n/plane_ru.properties

It seems reasonable to me that a single F-86F-25 model is quite representative.  Apparently even some F-86E models (slatted wing and all-moving tail plane) were field-fitted with the 6-3 wing in Korea, so I'm happy with this compromise for my game:

"The F-86F-25 was introduced with a legendary new wing designed in response to pilot reports that early F-86Fs in Korea could not turn as tightly as the Mig-15 in combat at high Mach numbers and altitudes. F-86s turning with MiG-15s had encountered aerodynamic forces that opened their leading edge slats, which normally opened only at slow speeds.

To correct this problem, North American test pilot George Welch suggested a change in the Sabre's wing during summer 1952 that led to the famous "6-3" wing. Welch recommended removing the slats and extending the F-86's leading edges instead. Three modified F-86E Sabres were tested. By August 1952, the 6-3 wing was perfected. This modification deleted the leading edge slats and added a new solid leading edge with six inches more chord at the root near the fuselage and three inches more length at the wing tip. Finally, a five inch high boundary layer "fence" was added to the wing's upper surface at 70% of the wingspan to direct air flow. These changes resulted in a lowerdrag coefficient and added seven miles per hour to the Sabre's top speed to 695 miles per hour. They also improved the maneuverability at high altitude by delaying the onset of buffeting.

The result of these changes was that the F-86F now turned inside the Mig-15 at high altitudes. The F-86's performance improved by 1.5g at Mach 0.92 at 30,000 feet before buffeting developed. The operating altitude also increased to 52,000 feet, maximum Mach reached 1.05 (in a dive), and the rate of climb increased by almost 300 feet per minute. The F-86F then became the unquestioned supreme day fighter in the world, but the trade off for the improved high-speed performance was that the Sabre's stalling speed was increased by 20 miles per hour. This required a faster landing approach (as there were no leading edge slats), and the low speed handling qualities suffered. Higher take off and landing speeds were needed to maintain controllability, but the improvement in combat far outweighed any negative aspects."

NB: a similar exercise could be done if instead of the F-86F-25 the player prefers to have a representative F-86E  (made from the F-86F25E model) using your 3D update version with no wing fence.

Nice link to the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association magazine Sabre Jet Classics (source of excerpt above) here: http://sabre-pilots.org/classics.htm

Hope it helps someone!  :)

P.S.  if anyone has problems installing UV2 in their modact install, I have a very nice combined sound pack and Tiger Flybys 'Lite' that will install over the SAS Sound and Gun mod.  It will possibly conflict with some other mods, like the PAT camera mod, and perhaps some of the heavier fx packs, but its very satisfying in my lightly modded modact install with the standard SAS fx pack.  Happy to share.

---------------------------------

22 October 2015, Edit:  Here are links to the sound files from my current 4.09 Modact install.  These are a lite, cutdown, SAS patched version of the original Tiger's Flybys, and a very nice sound compilation by Jafa.  Download the files and extract the folders into your MODS folder - job done.  I really enjoy the way these files sound, and they aren't too 'heavy' in my install.  Hope you enjoy 'em too.  Recommend installing these in a clean 4.09 modact install, over the 'classic sound and gun mod' listed above (or use all the files above to have a nice collection of 4.09 MiGs 'n Sabres, P-51s and Hellcats all with compatible Browning .50 calibre machine guns).  This setup works great with even modest hardware, and I thoroughly recommend it if you have problems with heavier packs and want to enjoy a classic-modded 4.09 level game.  Thorsten is also intending to try these 4.09 files in 4.12 as an alternative to UV3.

https://www.mediafire.com/download/1hfbgpabla0brmt/Windblow_fix.7z

These files are zipped straight from my own thoroughly-tested MODS folder, and should work in your fresh 4.09 install straight away too, provided I haven't forgotten anything.  Please let me know if you have any problems, and I'll do my best to help.  Remember to back up in case of hassles.

My current 4.09 modact install also has a very nice (in my opinion) collection of lite 4.09 FX (some quite rare) which I can also upload if folks are interested.  Edit: See next post.

All the best, KB.  :)

F9F Panther companion for 4.09 modact installs
« Reply #2 on: October 25, 2015, 08:04:45 PM »

I'm having way too much fun with this not to share!

With Tom's F-86 updates installed in my manual 4.09 modact setup, it was crying out for an F9F companion for some  'Bridges Over Toko-Ri' style action.  The current F9Fs don't work so well in 4.09 modact, so here goes with a special bonus for fans of Tom's F-86...

This was the version I found to work best in 4.09 modact.  It doesn't have the latest cockpit, opening canopy or ejection seat (perhaps I'll manage to add these later) but it flys beautifully and won't crash your 4.09 modact install.  It's the SASv1.4 model, resurrected from my treasure vault and zipped straight from my 4.09 mods folder, just for you guys:

https://www.mediafire.com/download/4rvc8burz6abcs5/F9F2_Panther_v1.4sas.7z

Check this baby out!

Target is this bend in the road, where a AAA site is located.  By good fortune, a column of motor transport is passing by too...

"Smell o' Napalm in the Morning."  AAA site is toast, and a bunch of MT besides.

(click on pics to embiggen 'em in Photobucket)

The key to ground-pounding fun, of course, is some nice FX.  Mine are compiled from a bunch of sources, the core being a pack from a modder called Stuka_40 (some files have been modified by me), installed over the stock SAS_Smoke_FX, and of course, for the F9F, CY6's Napalm FX.  These FX mods are nice and lite, and zipped straight from my mods folder.  Get 'em here:

https://www.mediafire.com/download/087b4j5l2yhhfp2/SmokeAirTouch.7z

I actually really like the original SAS_Smoke_FX for dogfighting, so for air-to-air combat I often remark out the Stuka_40 FX pack (with a "-").  The Stuka_40 FX, however, add a ton of atmosphere to air-to-ground missions, including a 'distance mod'.  Hope you like 'em if you try 'em.  I recommend installing these in a fresh classic-modded 4.09 install (without any other FX packs).  If you have any problems, I'll do my best to help.

Cheers

AD-4 Skyraider companion for 4.09 modact installs
« Reply #3 on: October 25, 2015, 08:07:38 PM »

Since we already have Sabres and Panthers (see previous posts) here's another bonus from the vault, CY6's beast AD-4 Skyraider, zipped straight from my mods folder.  This is version 2.5, patched and flying beautifully in my classic-modded 4.09 manual modact install.  A bonus for fans of Tom's Sabre update, this version has a default USN Korean pilot skin built-in, and I've also included VP _Media's default paintscheme for the Vietnam-era USAF A-1J.  Hope you like these 'Spads'.  My install doesn't include a nuclear explosion effect, as I don't do nuke missions myself, so you're on your own if you want to use the Mk.7.  Any other problems, holler and I'll help if I can.  :)

Get 'em here: https://www.mediafire.com/download/v5519hvdq2bfdsb/CY6_Skyraiders.7z

Is there a deadlier ground-attack bird in the game?

Cheers,

p.s. I'm working on a nice carrier ops training mission to upload to this post, so check back soon...

Hey fellas.  It's Friday morning in EnZed, so here's a little teaser of my projects this weekend (if I get any hobby time that is... my son's cricket season is underway, and there's the little matter of a game of rugger in Londontown come Sunday morning).

To get the AD-4 Mk.7 tactical nuke working, I needed the FX from a working 4.09 version of the Silverplate B-29 mod, which required a few other subtle tricks.  That got me thinking about recreating the Enola Gay and Bockscar missions...

Then, I found this little treasure...

... which got me thinking about Tokyo fire raids and the Doolittle mission, B-25s, A-26s and the Pusan perimeter, which in turn led me to a classic collection of All Aircract Arcade mods...

You gotta love 4.09 classic modding.  All the details to follow this weeked (I hope!)

West Field, Tinian.  Home of the 58th Bombardment Wing.

North Field, Tinian.  Largest airfield in the world in 1945.  Home of the 313th Bombardment Wing; and 509th Composite Group, top secret atomic Silverplate B-29 unit...

Coming soon  to a 4.09 install near you!

I like your initiatives KB. Except for the Enola Gay missions, that is not my kind of thing as re-enactment target as for (my) taste too many people died at one second.
Yet I also like the Panther mods and if you like I can extract the Jet Era FPS saving Freddy cockpits.

Cheers

PS
For classic jet skins + WWII I recommend this site, much worth registering at:
Crom's forum

http://cromhunt.proboards.com/board/14/skins-new-series-2008-2009

Also hope one day we get a repainted F-80 pit there, as we already have newly meshed F-80 pits.

Hi Tom! yes please, the F9F Freddy pits would be cool.  I know the Cromhunt boards, and have a registration, very nice place to visit!  :)

I have mixed feelings about the atomic missions too.  The OJ map basically isn't populated as it stands, and aside from doing a nice B-29 base, I'm thinking I might pretty much leave it that way - just have 'textured' cities instead to represent Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  For a few reasons: they're high-altitude missions so the player won't really see the objects anyway; the nuke FX are murder on fame-rates in any case; and, like you, I don't particularly want to blow up thousands of homes, even virtual ones.

I'm curious, though, to play the missions and contemplate what they meant, and to honour the sacrifice all those civilian casualties, all the human suffering, and all the tragedy, made to a future appetite for world peace.  As horrific as they were, the atomic detonations are an important part of all our history.  I grew up in the Cold War, when, even in New Zealand, fears of nuclear holocaust were never far from the surface in everday life and popular culture - it was something that shaped my life, at least in part.  New Zealand remains strictly anti-nuclear to this day.

My feelings are much the same towards the Tokyo fire raids, which are claimed to be the most destructive and deadly in history, even more so than Dresden, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Tokyo probably needs buildings to recreate at least some likeness to real events...

The map will be good for less sobering missions too, like Doolittle, and lesser B-29 raids on the Japanese homelands.

Difficult, confronting and challenging subject matter indeed... the first thing I noticed when I 'google-mapped' Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the peace memorials.

Google Maps - Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum (Google Maps will take you inside to have a look around)

Google Maps - Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims

Google Maps - Hiroshima Children's Peace Monument
