Hi guys!

I recently reinstalled IL-2, patched it up to 4.13 and added the latest compatible mods. First test run: Game loads ok, but when I start a mission I get slapped in the face by the classic error mentioned in the title. If I click "Fly" once again, I get thrown back to desktop, without the resolution changing to match the monitor.

I'm running the following mods:-Engine mod for 4.13
                                           -JetWar 1.33
                                           -Vega's ordonance pack
                                           -The all-too-popular "Default Ordonance" HD stock weapons pack
                                           -Vega's unified MiG-21 pack

I do, but it still won't work.

Additional info you might find interesting: After I press "fly" for the first time and get the error, the plane customisation window goes haywire: At first, the aircraft appears yellow on a dark background, with parts of the plane being basically invisible. If I rotate the aircraft in the window, different parts of it become invisible. Few seconds later, the aircraft appears white on the classic blue background. I'll post a video of it tomorrow, 'cause I've never seen anything like this before.

OpenGL provider: dx8wrap.dllAre you sure you want to run the game in DirectX mode instead of OpenGL?
The only reason why you would want to do so usually is when you play the game in an integrated Intel HD graphics chip.

If you're sure that DirectX is what you want to have, then you have to set these two lines in the DirectX renderer section accordingly:

Still isn't working :'(

I tried changing the values of TexCompress and TexFlags.TexcompressARBExt on the DirectX category, but it's still not working. In the options menu I have DirectX selected.

Still have the plane customisation glitch, but I haven't been able to film it. Fraps crashed when IL-2 gave the mono.cim error,  if I started filming early on, and if I started filming after the error, when watching the plane customisation window, it wouldn't film at all.

Also, if I press Alt+Tab and then return to the game, the game would crash. Same if I tried changing the resolution to mach the one on my monitor.

Look at this line in your config.ini
[GLPROVIDER]
GL=dx8wrap.dll

it should read
[GLPROVIDER]
GL=Opengl32.dll

Make shure your conf.ini isnĀ“t set to read only before you do the changes, right click, properties, untick read only if ticked! Ok twice, do your changes, test.

The DirectX selection might be intentional (in case he using the CPU integrated Intel HD graphics), unfortunately Kilo doesn't tell us :-|

Anyway, let's assume for a moment that it is intentional.

Then there's this line in your log that precedes the paratrooper error:

ERROR: Not enough memory: SectFile '3do/humans/Paratroopers/Russia/Body.msh'
Which means nothing but the texture still doesn't fit into your GPU's memory buffer.
In case of Intel HD graphics you might be able to raise the memory share portion dedicated to your GPU.
Besides that, these settings will help as well, you can play around with them:

Can you explain what's the main difference between OpenGL and DirectX? When should each be used?

As stated before, the only reason you would want to use DirectX is when you have to use a CPU-integrated Intel HD graphics adapter, since these don't support OpenGL correctly.
Other than that, for IL-2 you will always want to use OpenGL since that's the only way to get the so called "perfect mode" and generally OpenGL performs better in IL-2.

That's the IL-2 part of it.
General speaking, the main difference between OpenGL and DirectX is that... they're completely different approaches for the same thing.
The difference in detail fills books.
