Custom Air Forces
« on: December 18, 2015, 01:51:21 AM »

Does any one know how to add custom air forces to the game or edit existing ones and if so is it possible they could share this knowledge? I would really love to add my own custom air forces to the game with their own custom markings.

You want to add an airforce? I don't thing there is any more than what is being released with ModActs/CUP...
You want to create your own? Well - get coding.

I'd like to add my own but I don't know how to, hence why I posted here.

if you use the forgotten countries mod, there are many new countries to fly for - it's quite possible to edit one of those countries insignia to make your own, others have done it before - no coding necessary for that, although it might be if you want to change the country name ingame.
it's not the kind of 'knowledge' i can share, sadly, as it's years since i looked at that stuff.
don't expect to be provided all info you want just by asking, though - very often you will have to go and do the research/forum hunting yourself...
i'm not sure if this exact info is available in the forums, but there should be something if you dig a bit.

not really....start by doing a forum search for' forgotten countries'.
you should get about 9 pages of results, some more relevant than others, but the info you're looking for should be there.
you'll understand it might take a little time, which i don't have atm to help you out with - maybe someone else can, but that's as good a place to start as any.
please note, when asking for help in the forum, try and make your questions as specific as possible.
when you ask a broad 'how do i mod?' type of statement, not many will be prepared to spend the weeks that that might entail.
be specific, ask about the exact thing you want, and it's easier to provide help. ;)

One of my questions is, where do I find all the air force decals?

Hi WWII44,

Customizing "Forgotten Countries" is a great project to learn about the game's structure, and modding in general, because there is a lot you can do without having to master Java (the dark and mysterious modder's code  ;D ).  There is a lot of info here that will get you started, related to adding a new squadron (a new "regiment") to an existing air force (an existing "country"), including some information on how to go about making "decals."

To get you started on adding a new "country," have a look here:

All the best,

this may prove useful, the last piece of the puzzle is adding a custom roundel.

If you follow the quide to create the "Holzhammer" regiment decal as an exercise, you shouldn't have too much trouble making a country roundel.  Choose an existing country roundel, and make sure your own custom roundel matches all its properties to work in-game (number of pixels, file size etc).  You can find those properties by opening the existing country roundel in IrfanView.

Have a look here for more ideas about markings.  "Spookies Markings" mod is the granddaddy of 'em all! Spookies' method is more sophisticated again, requiring photoshop (.psd file).

Good luck!  :)

Oh, I just remembered the other great marking mod, MAT Manager 2.36.  A word of warning though WWII44, MAT Manager is a funky little piece of genius.  Don't use it on your main IL-2 install initially, better to create another, separate install to experiment with first, then use at your own risk!  That said, inside MAT Manager are some brilliant markings...
