exactly why I posted the above message...I know that you old hare guys know your way around but the youngsters and less experienced guys may end up with more troubles than those blue flames are worth...
a single misplaced classfile can ruin the whole install...

just for example, my modded modules do not want to run on the stock engine mod coming with pt17...they crash as soon as tracers appear;
this is only alleviated when I drop the classfiles from the JC effects in...strange but it works...
even loading up Gurners 4.3 effects without the classfiles work when loaded before every other effects mod...

out of this I highly appreciate SimonĀ“s effort to consolidate the classfiles and do not want to post links to stuff that compromise this effort..

*cough* I can provide a link for the stuff that I use, but these are actually old files, coming from newTFM/DBW times; the classfiles may or may not be compatible with what CUP uses; I have not experienced any strange things yet but still, as CUP is Simons baby and his reasoning of tidying up classfiles as much as possible is very sound, I do not want to get in any stuff unofficially that may not be compatible with what Simon wants to achieve;

for this reason, I might provide a link but will warn people that they will use these folders on their own risk .....

I am only interested in the flames files, not all the others.  You can always PM me the files/link.  I do some CUP testing at times for Simon so I would just like to do some testing in this area and then report my findings to Simon.  I will not make a general release.

Thanks,
Dennis

right, some initial feedback from my testing - first thing i did was compare the two classes you sent me with what i already have exisitng in my install, and this is what i found:
in my Modact 530 install, i found the first class, 9147012A04461808 appeared in 3 different mods i had installed.

1 - SAS Engine Mod     -------  date modded: 11/8/2013, size 18.4KB
2 - PAL_Cockpit_Sounds  ----- date modded: 8/30/2013, size 24KB
3 - # blue flame mod   ------- date modded: 7/1/2012, size 25.2KB

the one i just received for testing is dated 10/26/2012, and size 29KB.
i disabled the others, and tested with just this one, and initial results seem to show blue flames functioning properly for all planes that i tested (i just randomly chose half a dozen planes, and all working great)
a similar scenario exists for the second classfile, C1175F8CD8B28230.
so, just looking at superficially like that, without going into the dark heart of java, i can see that, although this file is not the latest (date-wise), but it is the biggest in size, meaning it has more info in it than the others.
i still need to test more to confirm, but it appears as if the Engine Mod files and/or the PAL_CockpitSounds files are the cause of the flames disappearing, at least partially... they are the most recently modded ones, but they contain less data than the older ones, which means either something was removed, or not put in to begin with.
using either of those, i only get blue flames with the 109's, not any other planes.
so the one i got for testing seems to be the correct one, at least as far as i've been testing.
as for the wep eff file, i found three as well, but they are all exact duplicates of each other.
will give some more feedback once i get time for a more conclusive test, but for now that's what i've found.
hope this helps someone. ;)

yes, the files i've checked against include the latest Engine Mod western patch, although i must mention i am using the latest patched version of JapanCat's MargeEffects 20151031R, not the standard SAS Engine Mod. still, i have both patched to latest version in my game, just with one currently disabled for testing.
and, of course, i am doing this testing on my Modact 530 game, so it might not be the same for CUP users...

edit: walter, just double-checked on the same file inside the standard SAS Engine Mod, and that one, while it is the most recently modified one, dated 6/10/2014, is also the smallest in size, 18.2KB, so that doesn't look promising, but i still need to test it.

so, a quick external comparison between the two Engine Mod classes (SAS and JapanCat MargeEffects) shows us:

SAS Engine Mod -  ------------------ 6/10/2014, 18.2KB
SAS MargeEffects Engine Mod - ---  11/8/2013, 18.4KB

testing to be continued....

I'd love to have the engine flame mod in MA 5.3 for my P-38Ls. :P
If you mean the effects which come on inflight, visible on the exhaust tubes.
ALso loved to have them in 4.09m but gave up that hope. :P

SO.. good Luck for this test. ;)

Thorste..the files i have sent to Eugene work also in 4.10...in fact they come from a TFM/DBW install...i see no reason why they should not work in 4.09...i can send you a link if you also want to test :)

all i can add, is that i have never been happier with any of my Modact installs than i am with this one - ever since i got those exhaust flames working this morning, i've been grinning from ear to ear like the Cheshire cat that got all the cream :D

Maybe is better to ask western to investigate as he still wait for issue reports in his development of engine mod patches....moreover I think that the engine mod could be mandatory not only in jet age but also for jet powered engines of WWII....

i'll still be testing over the weekend, to see if i can see any other side-effects of this mod, but so far it seems as if everything is okay.
i will ask western to have a look as well.. ;)
