Re-Numbering of US Escort Carriers ?
« on: February 03, 2016, 07:54:04 PM »

Greetings All,

Though this is in fact a request , it does not fit the parameters of a full mod request , and I am floating it in the Lounge as a result. If it is more appropriate elsewhere , please move it.

I am developing an SEOW (Scorched Earth Online War) Campaign for Operation Toenails , the Allied reconquest of the New Georgia Island group in the Solomon Islands in June - July 1943.

One of the elements of the campaign was CarDiv22 (Carrier Division 22) consisting of the 3 Sangamon Class Escort Carriers CVE-26 Sangamon , CVE-27 Suwannee , and CVE-28 Chenango.

These doughty "Jeep" Carriers , modified in need from the Cimarron Class of Tankers , served by delivering Supplies . Troops and Aircraft replacements to Guadalcanal , as well as covering the ground campaign. They operated between the New Hebrides , Guadalcanal and the Slot.

I am wondering if a modder out there can change the deck numbers of the US CVEs included in HSFX 7 ,
the Casablanca CVE55 , Kitkun Bay CVE71 , Shamrock Bay CVE84 , to those of the CVEs in question - CVE26 , CVE27 , CVE28.

As an alternative , how about any one of the CVE's with no deck number - the net shows many photos of CVEs in service without deck numbers , and this might serve as a more versatile ship for campaign builders in this way. Call it "CVE Generic" , or something like it.

Thanks for your consideration.

Perhaps all it needs is to change the skins to have the numbers you would like to see?
It seems this calls for a painting of skins.

I am certain that is the issue , Max. The question is how to do so.

The ideal (fantasy) solution , would be a ship enumeration panel in the Ship Properties Tab of the FMB with a selection of numbers and letters .
Probably not terribly satisfying for the naval grognards out there , but immensely useful for campaign and mission designers.
Of course for full implementation it would also require generic skins with no numbers for each vessel class. A lot of work , and likely to not please a ship modder who spent months of work to create an historically accurate specific vessel.

hi Kopf, this falls squarely into the Skin request section for now, i think - so i moved it here ;)
your first post's requests are quite easily doable with changing the number on the relevant tga file/s.
to then do several 'copies' of the tga, each differently numbered, may be a little tedious initially, but once done, it's a simple matter of swapping whichever one you want to use in and out.
your second post, with the ideal 'fantasy' solution is a step or two too far, i think - look how we still struggle with the markings system in IL-2 after all these years, and then consider that what you're asking about is essentially a similar system for ships.
a nightmare bit of work, when simply swapping in a different tga will serve the same result.
so i think, best to focus on the first post suggestion. ;)
