TangleChute CTD - Modact530
« on: March 02, 2016, 12:55:27 AM »

i've seen several threads concerning this issue in the CUP tech help section, but so far all the threads i've read there seem to offer no definitive answer to this issue?
if the advice is to remove VisualMod, my answer is...  o_O ...really? i somehow doubt benitomuso would have released this mod with such an issue, and on top of that, i've been using VisualMod since it's inception, and today is the first time i've had this error. so, i have my doubts, to say the least.
currently i'm using the latest VisualMod (not an official release yet, from my understanding) - the one that includes the Ordnance cam view option.
anyway, this is happening to me with my Modact 530 install, and looking for some solution, if possible.
error log as follows:

Code: [Select]
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError
[7:40:29 AM] at com.maddox.il2.objects.air.Chute.TangleChute(Chute.java:165)

[7:40:29 AM] at com.maddox.il2.game.GameWin3D.main(GameWin3D.java:235)

as you can see, the log also ends abruptly, not in the way it should....

it seems to happen when a plane is hit (possibly only multi-crew planes, but i'm still testing this to be sure) and at the point when the crew start to bail out, the ctd happens - presumably because of some issue with their parachute/s not opening properly?

anyhoo, as this issue seems to be happening rather frequently to members recently, i think we should really try and find a definitive solution to this issue, and make a sticky of it.
so, anyone have any idea what the cause of this is, and more importantly, how to solve it?
thanks in advance for any assist :)

No solid leads but here's a guess. Maybe someone made a mod to simulate the chances of a chute not opening properly for the AI, and it's a random chance, so it would follow that a multi-seat aircraft has a greater probability of triggering the event but the TangleChute method isn't where it's supposed to be because that class has been updated by a different mod without incorporating the TangleChute code. A lot of ifs and buts there....

Moezilla, i'd tend to agree with you, at least on the random part - i've been playing many many scenarios in my Modact game, and this is the first time that i've experienced this 'tanglechute' ctd - and definitely i've had multi-crew bailouts happening before, with no such ctd happening....
investigation ongoing....

I'd use classcheck.exe and if theres a conflict changing the load order could solve the problem.

i would - however, this is a huge install, and classcheck will pick up literally hundreds of potential conflicts - to sift through that lot would take ages, so i don't know if it's worth the effort, at least to me...  :P
maybe when next i have a two week free period i might tackle it, but that's nowhere in sight, lol

um...okay, although this might only get a result if we're assuming the problem to be with VisualMod, is that right?
i'll certainly try this (after my coffee, that is :D ) but i have my doubts as to the problem lying with the VisualMod
thanks mate ;)

well, i only mentioned the VisualMod, as that seems to be the most popular advice for CUP users.
i certainly don't consider 'disable VisualMod' as a solution of any sort - it is literally my most essential mod, and as i say i've been using it since the very first version, and not once had this error before.
i am using the latest VisualMod, from here - https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50130.msg547482.html#msg547482
this is the most recent version, not even fully released yet - still a test version, at least as far as the ordnance cam view is concerned, but other than that it's the latest VisualMod, and it is right on top in my loading order - the only other mod that loads before it is the Common Utils mod, which has no conflicts with it.
so, that advice will certainly not fix the problem for me.
this is a Modact install, remember - not CUP, so i don't have different Visualmods that i swap in and out as needed.
so far, most if not all of the TangleChute error threads relate to CUP installs, i think this thread is the first to mention this problem in a Modact install - i certainly wouldn't have created yet another tech help thread for this if it was a CUP install - there's already plenty of those ;)
i'm using the latest VisualMod, which disables the Iowa catapult which the Kingfisher plane uses - for now, i just have to sacrifice that one for the other newer functions.
anyway, testing with other VisualMod versions is on my list of checks in this regard, even though i doubt it's the VisualMod..... maybe i'll try and get hold of Pablo to see if he can tell me off-hand if his VisualMod has anything to do with this error.... that might be the best way to at least get it off the list of suspects.
if anything, my suspicions lie with the latest Engine Mod - not the regular one, but the JCat MargeEffects one, which has been updated by western several times recently.
i'll be checking that for conflicts as well, as i work my way down my list... ;)

well, been doing quite a bit of testing regarding this problem, and sadly no closer to the cause yet - all i can say is that it only seems to affect planes with a crew of 3 or more - i've not yet seen it happen with a plane with one or two crew bailing out.
it does seem a little silly that this error causes a ctd - if we could figure out which mod causes this, it must be easy enough for any error to just be read, ignored and the game can continue, without crashing.
my only workaround for this at the moment is far from ideal, but it does seem to work, and that is to make sure that in any missions i fly which has multi-crew planes, i make sure that they don't have parachutes.
while less immersive, at least i can get through such a mission without the game crashing....  :P

Putting these mods (jcat effects, visualmod, enginemod, common utils) together is not a good idea unless youre a java programmer. :D  ;) What you can do is to deactivate those complex java mods and test, you'll find the culprit sooner or later. After that you use binary exclusion on the classfiles and you'll be able to narrow it down to one...if you're lucky...but its worth a try.

Those classfiles have these names in hashed:

4604678C06DFCD3A
A04427AA409DADDE
B35F81EE294C5E10
F9D62C36CCF5985E

Does what folder have them ?

---

In my working modded folder, those classfiles don't exist in #SAS folder.
So, stock 4.12.2m game's Chute.class works OK.

Indeed the Chute class isn't modified in SAS Modact.
Eugene, your issue is that some other mod replaced the "Paratrooper" class.
My bet would be something like the "walking pilot" mod.

Look for mod folders containing the file "6D8F6BA002E7F440".

Best regards - Mike

Yah....

I'm looking into Chute.class and Paratrooper.class ...

Chute.class 's TangleChute(Actor, boolean) method calls Paratrooper.class 's chuteTangled(Actor, boolean) method like
Code: [Select]
            if(Actor.isValid(paratrooper))
                paratrooper.chuteTangled(actor, flag);
4.12.2m stock Paratrooper.class has chuteTangled(Actor, boolean) method.

Pablo's Visual MOD V9 (containing Walking Pilot) 's Paratrooper.class doesn't have that method , its missing causes error and CTD.
