Flyby sounds, again
« on: March 27, 2016, 03:11:51 PM »

Hello all,

Should I be able to hear flyby sounds when watching NTRKs? I've been searching through the forums and trying different things, but so far no success.

To star with, I did a clean install of 4.12, then added C.U.P. then opened the game to watch some tracks, to see if everything is working OK. I haven't even attempted to fly yet, but I noticed in NTRKs I hear no flyby sounds, or sounds that are so low as to be inaudible.

The only thing I have activated in JSGME right now is #WAW - Soundset #03

If I turn the speakers up way loud, I can hear a whining kind of flyby sound, but I mean I have to turn volume up to absolute max. Same for #WAW - Soundset #02

If I don't use any of the #WAW sounds and turn the volume way up, I hear a lower-pitched engine flyby sound. But as before... I need to turn it up to an unsafe volume to hear this. I'm afraid if someone fires weapons or I switch back to cockpit it will blow the speakers.

Sound section of my config.ini looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[sound]
SoundUse=1
SoundEngine=1
Speakers=1
Placement=0
SoundFlags.reversestereo=0
RadioFlags.Enabled=1
RadioEngine=2
MusicVolume=0
ObjectVolume=14
MusState.takeoff=1
MusState.inflight=1
MusState.crash=1
MusFlags.play=1
MasterVolume=14
Attenuation=5
SoundMode=1
SamplingRate=2
NumChannels=3
SoundExt.occlusions=0
SoundFlags.hardware=1
SoundFlags.streams=1
SoundFlags.duplex=1
SoundExt.acoustics=0
SoundExt.volumefx=0
SoundFlags.voicemgr=0
SoundFlags.static=1
VoiceVolume=12
Channels=2
SoundExt.extrender=0
SoundFlags.bugscorrect=0
SoundSetupId=8
ActivationLevel=0.02
Preemphasis=0.85
RadioLatency=0.5
AGC=1
PTTMode=1
SoundFlags.UseRadioChatter=0
SoundFlags.AutoActivation=0
RadioFlags.PTTMode=0
RadioFlags.PlayClicks=0
ActLevel=0
MicLevel=0
SoundFlags.forceEAX1=0

I'd be glad to post sections of log.lst but it is huge. I do see some exceptions in there but they are all stuff like this:

[9:03:54 PM]   java.lang.RuntimeException: Can't set property
[9:03:54 PM]      at com.maddox.il2.objects.ships.BigshipGeneric$SPAWN.getS(BigshipGeneric.java:226)

If you need to see a certain part of logfile.lst please let me know. I am starting to become afraid my C.U.P installation is messed up somehow.

Oh good grief, is it as simple as I need to enable all three of those CUP soundsets? That I have not tried yet

edit: No, that's not it.

I don't think this is an install-related issue. Il-2 with C.U.P. has been almost totally issue-free for me, starting with the install on up to playing it last night.

Can anyone who is using C.U.P. and getting sound in flybys, post the sound section of their conf.ini for me to compare? I feel like there is just a misconfiguration somewhere on my rig.

After I installed from disc and patched up to 4.12.2m and started it up to make sure it was working, I was a good boy and made a complete copy of the game folder on an external HD. So I can restore that and start over again installing CUP, but I didn't encounter any issues during the install and I found that it was a very simple, straight-forward process. A little lengthy, but not difficult at all. I suppose I could have made a mistake nonetheless.

I didn't save every single #WAW I remarked out during the install, except the last one, part 19 I think. I could revert to that and check flybys.

I would start with the latest version of the CUP manual. It has a section specifically about sounds. Then do a search.

I have the manual, and I have read the sections about sound. This is what it says about conf.ini:

Code: [Select]
[sound]
...
SoundUse=1
SoundEngine=1
Speakers=1
...
Attenuation=5
SoundMode=1
SamplingRate=1
NumChannels=4
...
[Mods]
...
Flyby=1
FlybyFov=60.0
ToggleMusic=1
RandomSplash=1

What I posted in the OP differs from the manual values for SoundMode and SamplingRate because those were things I found through search, which fixed it for other people. My conf.ini is back to what it was originally, the values in the box above.

I spent Sunday morning searching, before I posted this. Search results are all over the place, many people in the same boat with no mentioned fix, and the occasional weird fix, including one guy who claimed to have fixed it by setting Flyby=0 (which directly contradicts the manual)

This probably sums it up best, : https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50245.12.html

It is not a situation people see only with CUP, there are many "no flyby" posts in all sections of the forums. I posted it this section because that's what I installed Saturday, from no IL-2 to CUP in one go.

In the posts marked FIXED I have not found a solution that works for me yet. Next step will be to just restore the unmodded 4.12.m install and see if flybys work there. Whether it works or not, that will wrap it up. This is not worth further effort, I will just play without hitting F3.

Currently in JSGME I have CUP soundset #2 active. I have tried with all three CUP soundsets, and tried with none. Flybys are silent in all cases.

I did not test with my unmodded 4.12 install last night, but I did browse around and listen to the flyby sounds individually, outside of the game. Man... those flyby sounds are MIND-BLOWING!

It never ceases to amaze me, all the detail you find in the game, thanks to all the work put in over a period of years on the mods. I truly believe we will never in our lifetimes see another sim with this many maps/eras/aircraft. It just cannot be beaten.

Re: Flyby sounds, again--FIXED

All, it is fixed.

In an unrelated thing, I found SAS~StorBror's post, reply #5 on this page: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9756.0.html

I was going line by line and applying his settings for max IL-2 graphics with an NVidia card, and when I was done, flyby sounds were all working. I'm afraid I cannot say just which of those settings it was that fixed it. I can tell you I did everything he said for NVidia cards. The only other thing I changed outside of that was to change HighGore to 0, where I had set it to 1 previously for the C.U.P JSGME gore option (if this was the problem, I will kick myself in the ass).

Everything else I have in config.ini is either the default, or the NVidia values in StorBror's post.

For the record, if anyone comes across this in search looking to fix the flyby issue, here is my rig:

4th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 Processor (8MB Cache)
16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz (2x8GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Ti with 2G GDDR5

Just FYI, with his settings from that post, I average 54 FPS on the Black Death ntrk.

Thanks everyone who replied, and thanks to StorBror for those great conf.ini values. I'm playing IL2 now with eye candy I only dreamed of in 2005. not to mention the fantastic sounds.

Also for future reference, in case someone comes across this in search, WAW pt 20 is what I'm on here.

Could a mod please append (FIXED) to the thread subject line?
