@Chupacabras: I remember you posted something like that on the sticky thread. Anyway, tested WaW part8 with the lightened air.ini. On the previously mentioned mission, the FPS went from 16 to 17-18. The result is rather underwhelming.
One last thing, check whether you have threaded optimization, on my PC I have it in nvidia control panel dont know where you might have, its CPU setting.
In any way, disable it for IL2 because that stuff that will definetelly kill your performance.

I have 2 very basic questions:

What are your system specs? (CPU, GPU, RAM, 64 or 32 bit, etc.)

What do you get for average FPS on TheBlackDeath.ntrk on a stock install? That has been the default benchmark track for many years.

CUP is very resource intensive. I'd suggest setting "Effects=0" in conf.ini and see what you get. For me, CUP has some issues with the effects, and minimizing the effects eliminates the problem with very little visual impact.

@JG7_X_Man: Im testing CUP on a clean install, I have a separate install for HSFX in a different hard drive. As for the instructions, I haven't seen anything special in the Step by Step guide, up to the part8 at least which is the point where my last test. I've done both Restore point installs when I did the part12 test too, with the same results. I haven't seen any special instructions besides the "delete the #WAW folder" on those points.

I'm still downloading the new parts for proper testing but it will take several hours to download due to my slow connection.

@Chupacabras84: AMD, or at least in my case, doesnt have that option. Running the lastest drivers version available for my videocard. I'll check if I can do anything about it.

@Cloyd: Posted a bit earlier in the thread but I guess I can go into details
OS: Win7 64 bits SP1
CPU: FX 6100 (6 cores), 3.3GHz OC'd to 3.8GHz
GPU: AMD HD 6850 1GB VRAM
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1666 MHz

As for the test, made 3 with the same config.ini values. One with the HSFX install, one with a fresh 4.12m install and one with the CUP install.
Fresh install: 49fps average, min of 13 during the explosions. Around 7000 total frames.
CUP part8 install: 26fps average, single digit min fps. Around 4300 total frames.
HSFX: 62 fps average, 24 min. Around 9800 total frames

All the tests were using Effects=0.
If you're wondering about the config.ini values, I'm using the ones posted by Sniperton earlier.

Okay, let's play this game to the end.

My rig is a docked HP ProBook 4520s (Win7 32) laptop with external display:

CPU i5 M 430 @ 2.27 GHz (2x2 cores) [single thread benchmark 898]
RAM 2 GB DDR3
GPU ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300/4500 series, 1GB [benchmark 155] [[my Jesus, it's so sad to see these figures!]]

Theoretically, this PC should never be able to run anything beyond Super Mario.

I generally play Il2 with a resolution of 1280x720, but now I made this test with 1600x900. Conf.ini graphic settings as above.

4.12.2                        average FPS 37, no stutters, frame-rate never below 20
HSFX                          average FPS 34, occassional stutters down to 11 (once to 7)
WAW #20                   average FPS 30, frequent stutters down to 7

Reducing resolution solves most of my problems, which means that the bottleneck of my system is the GPU.  When optimized this way, it comes out that I cannot run missions with 30+ planes, which means that another bottleneck is the CPU. The morale of the story is that eye-candy cost you GPU, while mass operations (many planes in the air) CPU.

Set water=0 and enjoy additional 10-20 frames, with those specs you really should lay off water=2 for a while  :-|
Also, CUP by default have water animation that looks pretty bad with water=0, in my lightened air.ini thread there is link to regular water that looks good on water=0.

@Sniperton: No changes for me when I reduce the resolution, so the problem should be the CPU. Cant afford to change it so I'll have to deal with what I have.

@Chupacabras: Well, the FPS improvement was a surprise. Black death went from  26fps average and 4300 total frames to 50fps average and 8000 total frames. The explosions and some other effects like the one we can see when the La shoots at the 190 still kill the FPS, reaching points as low as 7 FPS but now I have some hope for CUP.

@Chupa: Thanks, I will explore.

@Autopilot: Your CPU's single core benchmark is 1,182 compared to my 898, so we're in the same boot, but your GPU is much better. As to effect-related stutters there's one more thing you can do: play a little bit with the GPU's internal settings such as Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic-Filtering, etc. Switch off AI, and switch on Triple Buffering, when these settings are available. Just a blind guess.

Actually those extreme freezes in the black death track are pretty normal, as far as I am aware of, even strong PC's can drop to 16 frames.

traditionally i remember the lowest fps in 'black death' is when the il2 crashes at the end of the straffing run. Some people used to report the game freezing at that point.

I set water to 0 but the gain was minimal, from avg 30 to 33; still, it reduced the stutters a bit; for me with this weak GPU the way to go is to reduce resolution...

@nyali: In HSFX my FPS ramp up as soon as the IL-2 crashes, I get like 60fps around there. In CUP I get around 30-35 and 24 just before it crashes.

Well, I'm back. Downloaded and applied all the parts so I'm up to date, also defragged the HDD for proper tests since I had some stutter.
Ran 4 tests. One with all the cores from the processor, one with 3, one with 2, and one with a single core.
6 cores: 3500 total frames, 20fps average
3 cores: 6000 total frames
2 cores: 7000 frames, 39-40fps average. Awful stutter during the explosions and random stutter during the entire playback, even when there wasnt explosions.
1 core: 7500 frames, 42fps average. The only test which didnt suffer from horrible stutter, I suspect max FPS were lower because of this. Min fps during the explosions were around 11.
All the tests were with water=0, effects=0 and no smoke.

I didnt suffer from stutter in HSFX, just slowdowns to 16fps during the explosions. Why CUP benefits from being forced to use a single core? I just dont know. What I can suggest to everyone with stutter is to use a single core and test it. I guess eventually I'll test some missions and check how it fares.

I can not believe what I read here!

C.U.P. "WAW" runs flawless on my good old PC - incl. settings: "Effects=1" & "Water=4"!

Intel Quad 6600 (4 x 2,4 GHz), Nvidia 760 GTX, 6 GB RAM.

Videocard settings: Anisotrope Filter... x4, AA... x8.

Good luck for doing the right settings.  ;)

Best regards, Gerhard
