Ar234B3 (AWACS) is (probably) incompatible with CUP?
« on: July 16, 2016, 11:31:05 AM »

Just to share my experience.
We have wonderful "AWACS" Arado 234B3 in WAW. Great for Luftwaffe 46 and other "what if" scenarios.
(More about this model: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,39183.0.html )
It flies OK in CUP, if chosen by a player.
Unfortunately, if I switch it to AI and attempt to use another plane, the whole mission goes wrong.
Planes do not take off from airfields (crush or explosion) and some planes supposed to start in the air do not appear at all.
And Ar 234B3 sits on the ground... in bright rose colours. Instead of flying at high altitude as scripted in the mission file.
A pity, indeed.

That's a bit of a leap mate!  What would be the point of using an AWACS crew feature for AI?  Simply assign the AI another type of 234.

The thing about scripted missions is they follow a script.  Front end editors during a campaign or mission are always a bad idea.

Rather than messing with a pre-scripted mission, outside of FMB, its better to take that mission and clone it.  Now take the clone into FMB and write the new mission the way you envisage.

It is a bit of long process sometimes, working through FMB, and testing to destruction.  But, believe me, its possible to write a huge variety of missions.  Personally I prefer scripted missions, written in FMB over anything else for these reasons:

1 More deatailed briefings are possible
2 Dense AI ground traffic may be planned
3 AI flightpaths and tasks may be fine tuned
4 Everything, AI, Scenery and player may be skinned for that particular mission.

...and a million other things etc etc...

To help anyone get started - Feel free to treat my released mission material as your own.  Pull them apart, use them as templates, experiment, add or take away elements.  The balance, for me, is about packing in content without degrading performance.  How to get the best effects without becoming a slideshow.  It takes a lot of patience and practice to write a scripted campiagn.

Don't just rely on QMB or DGen for a 'quick fix'.  Get into FMB - Research and write a campaign, 5 missions or more in a consecutive sequence, and you will soon see that ANYTHING is possible and NOTHING is broken at all.  We are limited only by our imagination and ability.  Both can easily be improved with more practice.  ;D

Thanks. And this is exactly what I do. I create missions from scratch in FMB.
In this particular case I just wanted to have a recon plane flying over the map at high altitude outside of flak and interceptors reach. Ar234B3 looks good for that - pretending she gives guidance to friendly flights and to ground control below - on incoming bombers, etc.
I changed it to "normal" Ar234. Miss that cool looking dish.  8)
