CUP Multiplayer Experience - 2016
« on: August 24, 2016, 07:54:04 PM »

I don't expect Multiplayer support, but I'm trying to maintain online compatibility for our group,
so, please humour me as I explain the situation and our use of CUP in IL2.

Our group has been using pure "CUP" installed as per instructions here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,47647.0.html
as a Multiplayer game.
Our CUP install is unmodified, other than jsgme options, and even those options are recommended by myself
so we are all on the same mods as far as compatibility between us is concerned.

I have been updating our group's CUP installations personally, ensuring we are all on the same page, so to speak.
Many unknown people are trying to join our online server, but so far, only one outside person has been successful
at flying with us.

There are very few issues so far, though, we mostly use the JTW module, and my comments here mostly pertain to
the JTW module, as extensive testing with the other modules online has not been done, but our time in WAW has
shown no known problems so far.

Online in JTW, guided missiles (air to air - air to ground) may as well be set to unlimited ammo, because so many are
available, and though I haven't counted exactly, the ratio is probably 10:1, so, if you load 4 missiles, you probably
can shoot 40 of them, and this ruins air to air combat against human players. Not a big issue for us, as we mostly
fly co-op style dogfight missions against AI targets.

The US Marine Aviation Pack jets (and perhaps it's ordinance) seem to be problematic for online use, with "Mouse Freeze"
lag issues arising for players and server alike, almost randomly, causing us to reset the server, and it's most common
if the F-18 fires air to air missiles it seems.

Personally, I could live without the F-18 and other USMAP jets, but our members want to use them in our missions,
so, we are seeking solutions for the above issues and flap issues with those jets and a couple others including the F-105's
odd FM under flap.

_____________

Another anomaly you may encounter is flap behaviour with some Russian Jets, the ones with 3 position flap settings
instead of the normal 4 positions for most planes. (I'm assuming this is a multiplayer issue, because of the REFLY ability.)

Let's say you spawn in an older Russian jet with only 3 flap positions and your flaps are inoperable. You need to re-spawn
into a 4 position flapped plane, then extend the flaps and retract them, next, respawn in the 3 position flapped jet you
desire, the flaps now work fine.

The non-working flap situation can be avoided by making sure you retract the flaps of any 4 position flapped plane
you are flying BEFORE you hit REFLY and select a 3 position flapped plane.

If you crash and burn during a landing, for example, with a 4 position flapped plane, then immediately REFLY into a
3 position flapped plane, this will replicate the issue I describe here.

Again, this is probably only a multiplayer issue, not sure though.

Interesting .
Me and my players group tried also to play JTW online , and when we discovered the unlimited missiles malfunction...our dreams were over.
Therefore we do not play JTW anymore .

The "unlimited" missile problem is not a game killer for us, there are plenty of things to do in JTW.

Pilot training itself is a big task with the variety of jets available, skills take time to develop and perfect.
We find the CUP JTW environment very useful for this.

Runways and airports are extended and populated by the mission builders in some of the beautiful maps CUP includes.
Air, sea and ground targets can be practiced by our group online.

Perhaps the only other serious competition JTW has is DCS?
DCS is very expensive if you want a variety of aircraft to fly, and the scenery is very limited there.

CUP JTW is a good choice for us, despite a few bugs.

Thanks SAS and modders.
