Singapore Map
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:53:54 AM »

I've been tinkering with a map of Singapore and surrounding areas. I know this has been done before, but the old map is really somewhat out of date in many aspects, mainly texture-wise. So perhaps an update with jungle looking textures and a much nicer FMB map would be in order. I've made a start-up basic map with a different method of assigning textures and so far it looks quite decent.

But Singapore is a map that needs more than just pretty textures. It should not be a dogfighting map and for that it would need some populating done that is more than just perfunctory. It's not that densely populated outside of the city as such, but the city and fortifications should ideally be made to some degree of accuracy, at least as far as Il-2 map-making permits.

So ... I wonder if anyone has an interest in taking on the populating of such a map? I know my limitations and studious populating with objects is not my strong point.

I'm sure an updated Singapore map would be a good addition to the game ...

i guess i could have a look at it, mate....i might need some reference material of the area, though, to at least get it to look something like it should.... ;)

As luck would have it, I have a quite good map of the period of the island itself - courtesy of Wikipedia I believe ... Even with troop dispositions and such ... outside of the island, populating needn't be very special, mainly villages and huts and stuff ... but the city with docks and forts deserves a good populating.

I'll set up a link later on today ... have some errands to do yet and I don't want to mess up a link.

Btw - there are no fields on the map yet, that's for later as cultivated fields in Asia need some careful work to look nicely ... and the textures assigned are also hardly set in stone. These things I tweak so often it borders on the pathological ... ha ha.

Here's a download link.

https://www.mediafire.com/?jdztijtmtno

There are no cultivated fields placed yet and the FMB map is not finished (the map overlay site is down - hope it is a temporary thing or otherwise maps will be looking far less colorful in the FMB). And the textures are still temporary so far ... there will undoubtedly be some adding of texture layers and changing around ...

Included is a map of Singapore island in 1941 - it's the jpg file in the map folder.

thanks, man - i saw that dunkelgrun offered to help over at aaa - would it be easier for each of us to tackle say, half the map, then just combine the 2 actors after?
or, what's the best way to tackle it, to avoid doubling up of work?  :)

That's a good idea - maybe one does the city and harbor or the island of Singapore as a whole

And the other does the rest of the country which would mainly be rural/fishing villages and small towns ...

And somebody might like doing airfields? That needs a bit more coordinating to get the map_h flattened in the correct areas ...

Maybe you could best work it out together - otherwise it gets confusing as go-between and things might tend to get mixed-up ...

I'll also have a cultivated fields version ready soon as well ... adds a bit of color to the landscape ...

The Singapore map as released by 1C falls short on several counts: the RN dockyard is missing entirely; so is Keppel Harbour; I doubt whether the aerodromes bear any resemblance to the originals, though Kallang, Sembawang, Seletar and Tengah are more or less in their original places; TWO causeways instead of the original one between Singapore Island and Johore; texturing in general leaves a lot to be desired etc etc.
I saw a preview of Singapore map_C as presumably originally intended by 1C before the release of ""Pacific Fighters" and this covered more area than the released version- the map included Malaya as far north as Kuantan, and also some of the Dutch islands to the south of Singapore. I can only assume that time constraints forced 1C to trim the map.

I just took a look at this new map and have a comment regarding the shape of Singapore Island. This more closely resembles Singapore's current 2010 shape and area- one thing 1C got quite accurately was the 1941 shape of Singapore. Bear in mind that Singapore has seen quite a bit of land reclamation work in the past decades, which has altered its shape quite significantly!

My own feeling re Singapore is that a rework of the map with new texturing  would be more worthwhile than starting from scratch, unless one is prepared to put in the extra work in correcting the shapes of Singapore Island and some of the islands to the south such as Pulau Bukom, plus adding some of the islands 1C deleted to simplify the map.
There was a discussion at AAA some time ago about a new expanded Singapore map (if I remember correctly dunkelgrun would take a look), but unfortunately nothing further has appeared so far.

I took a look at both maps, reassembled the original map_c from the standard Singapore map so they was easier to compare.

Reshaping Singapore island to confirm to 1941 conditions should not be a problem for the new map ... it looks fairly straightforward to do ... the new map was of course based on current satellite data, so some altering will be necessary.

I have a lot of info for the airfields, especially on Singapore Island itself; also the road/rail network. If nobody minds waiting for me for a little while then we can put our heads together and see what we can up with.

Iv'e done the same on a map Emil and I are doing
The Sat data was Way Off from back in 1939, and the 1939 map I am using to compare with.

It was an easy edit in Gimp to reshape the land and water in and around large Bay's to conform to the 1939 map I am using to build from rather than making the map conform to 2010 Sta data

If one was to work on the North and one on the South
Then the .tga's from one another could be merged together into one set of .tga later
To combine the map_t,map_h into one set with both persons work

I've already done it too. Singapore was the first map I got interested in, but moved away from it these last couple of years as I learnt more and more tricks and techniques. I really ought to get back to it!

I'm really excited about this new Singapore map.  I haven't seen any of it but from what I've read this will be a great map.  The stock IL2 map unfortunately is so plain and left much to be desired.  At the time of its release it was a good addition though.  Times have changed now with MODS and people have higher expectations.
Nice teamwork.  Good luck to all of you.
