4 Erla built Bf-109G-10's in the all green camo scheme
« on: September 19, 2016, 04:43:30 PM »

Here are 4 Erla built bf-109G-10's in Erla's distinctive late-war low-visibility camo scheme which had almost all the aricraft, except for under the wings, in either one or two dark colors, probably two shades of dark green.

Firstly, and unmarked and maybe factory-fresh G-10, (W.Nr. unknown), in a two tone scheme, photographed in Grafenwöhr in Eastern Bavaria in April 1945. The short tail wheel indicatets that this was among the last 109's produced by Erla.

Secondly is Yellow 5 of I./JG 300 (W.Nr 151965), in an apparently single tone scheme, photogrpahed in April 1945 (I don't know where though).

Finally two mystery birds, Black 7 (W.Nr. 152033) and Black 13 (W.Nr. unkown). Opinion seems to wary on these, but they are usually attributed to JG 27, the colour of the fuselage bands is quite uncertain, while green would be reasonable, since that was the colour of JG 27's fuselage bands, to me the contrast between the camo and the band is too great, and the bands would have to be in a ridiculously light shade of green for it to match up. If the bands are another colour, then maybe they were originally destined for, or served with, another unit, or maybe another colour than green was chosen so the bands would be visible  on the already all-green fuselages, I don't know, but in the end I opted for yellow bands.
In contrast to the others, on the photograph of "black 7" details of the paint-job of the wheel covers is visible, and they seem to have stripes of green ,either over a lighter colour, or over the bare aluminum, I'm not sure quite what's going on here, but I tried to recreate it as best I could.

(For the marked versions I include both the old-school 8-bit indexed-color version, and a 24-bit version, just choose whichever you'd rather have)

There was me thinking the German's were running out of paint! I mean by March/April 1945 they were using primers and leaving the undersides bare metal as you have demonstrated on the skins! Most likely these planes were built either on the spot, or at the factory at Augsburg before the factory was captured.

Beautiful skins though! A fine tribute to Capt. Farrell! Keep it up! His legacy continues with you Panzerfaust!

I don't think running out of paint was ever the problem as such, rather it was a question of the man-hours involved. It's naturally speeds up production to paint the entire fuselage a single colour (I believe Germany had even developed a special paint-formula that eliminated the need for a primer, at least for aircraft), and to leave other surfaces bare, and them maybe add a second colour in the end, compared to painting the entire aircraft light blue first, them to add two other camouflage colours and mottling over.

All of these aircraft were built by Erla in Leipzig, and that factory seems to have been the only one to adopt this all-green colour-scheme. I don't know exactly when Erla started to finish aircraft in this manner, but since all the photographs I know about of theses machines are from April 1945 or later, and since Leipzig was overrun in mid-April, then it's possible they only adopted this finish a few weeks before capture.

Will you do any more Bf-109's in the future? The ones that, like this weren't skinned, or need re-skinning in this fashion? Because I will do a 5 ship formation of the 4 Erla 109's and the sole K-4C-3 you made.
