Best IL-2:1946 Mods????
« on: September 20, 2016, 06:18:40 PM »

Hello everyone,

I am an old IL-2 veteran who has found my way back to IL-2. I have watched some videos on youtube showing different mods.

My father is a veteran of WW2. He was in the United States Marine Corps. He fought with the 2nd Division on Tarawa and was transferred to the 4th Division where he fought on Roi, Namur, Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. So obviously I have a huge interest in the PTO.

One of the things I stopped flying IL-2 was that there were a lot of flyable aircraft missing from IL-2:1946. I know with the Avenger it was due to legal reasons. But I noticed that there is a huge mod pack containing the flyable versions of the Avenger, Devastator, Helldiver, Vindicator, PBY, Mariner etc...

Also I noticed all of the islands my dad fought on plus new retextured islands and many new Pacific maps.

What is the best "mod pack" to download? is it an easy install as I am not very tech worthy. I found a mod pack containing, WW1, Interwar, WW2, jet age. Is this the C.U.P. mod.

Any help or advice is appreciated!!!!!!

Hi! The mod pack you found is most probably the CUP mod. It takes time to download and install it but if you follow the installation instructions strictly you should not have any major problems.
The mod is divided between modules. Each module gives you a different era of aviation. Depending on which era you want to play at given moment you activate the appropriate module by a tool which comes with CUP.
CUP is one of the latest mods and I think it's really cool. It gives a multitude of options and with some minor mods for sounds, graphics and others it makes IL-2 look much better. These are included with each module and are optional.

Priority modules for you are module 1 (essential for further installation) and module 3 which includes the Pacific war.

For CUP installation check it's section on this forum.

There are also other big mods, which are easier to install but they expand the game less like Ultrapack or HSFX. Take what you want. :) Notice that multiplayer does not always work in CUP. That depends.

This 'map' of IL-2 major mods is helpful: /www.derrierloisirs.fr/il2/bdd2012/organigramme.htm

It's cool for you to have a father who was a world war 2 veteran.  :) My grandparents were all born during or after the war so they couldn't tell me about it even though I was so interested in it. The last person of my family to remember the war was my great-grandfather but he died before I could ask him about it.

My grandparents lived through the war and never wanted to talk about it. When I was watching a war movie my grandpa would say "Turn that rubbish off!" and my grandma kept saying "Finish your food, we can see you haven't been through the war..."

Anyway, I personally fly CUP and I love it, its #WAW module has everything I want.

If you get lost in the CUP installation process you can also give VP Modpack a go, a bit simpler to install, great visually, it has had recent updates for the PTO maps: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50919.msg555492.html#msg555492

Both CUP and VP Modpack run on the 4.12.2m version of the game.

In my opinion CUP is the best thing that has happened to Il-2 when it comes to off-line play. But I cannot emphasize enough that you must follow the instructions to the letter when you install it. It takes a while but it is worth it. Read the manual and then read it again. If you have problems ask for help with them on the CUP tech help section of this site.

Hi Nanuuq

You should be aware that CUP doesn't run well if you have an older computer without sufficient hardware.
I could never get CUP to run smooth on my PC, so I installed VP Modpack instead. With VP Modpack I get similar frame rate as in UP2, UP3 and DBW.  :)

Here are some Benchmark tests I did between different mods:

Best regards

vonOben is quite right and I should have said this. I do find that the frame rate with CUP is somewhat slower than with DBW. In fact I get 42fps just like him. I am prepared to put up with this penalty because I feel CUP has so many other advantages but if your computer is too old or lacking power then CUP just won't run well and is not worth it whatever the advantages.
