Dave's Realism Effects for v4.12

Here’s an effects mod I’ve been working on for v4.12. This mod will not necessarily work with older versions of IL-2 because of all the effects changes introduced in v4.12. I’ve tried to tweak many effects I thought needed improvement but with as few classfile changes as possible. I’ve borrowed a few classfiles from another effects mod, but I’m not sure where I got them. Credit for those goes to whoever originally made them. The classfiles are only used to increase the flak puff view distances; you can choose not to use them if they’re causing a conflict.

I put together a quick video showing some of the effects in my mod. My goal was to go for realistic effects as opposed to “Michael Bay” type effects, while at the same time trying to reduce the total number of effects particles being used, if possible. Enjoy!

Here’s a quick list of what I changed with this mod:

Large Caliber (naval guns) gunfire and gunsmoke effects
Large caliber flak burst view distances and appearance (combo of classfiles and .mat files)
Cut down on engine start smoke effect to improve FPS
Increased ship wake draw distance to 50km (makes searching the open ocean for fleets more realistic since ships are only rendered as dots beyond a certain distance, and the wakes used to be visible for a relatively short distance)
Changed ships stack smoke exhaust
AT guns, large caliber AAA, tank cannons, and artillery gunfire and gunsmoke effects
7.62mm through 88mm aircraft guns daytime gunfire and gunsmoke
AAA (7.62mm, .50cal, 20mm, 37mm, 40mm) gunsmoke (the way the game is coded makes it hard to manipulate the gunfire because it’s tied to aircraft nighttime 20mm aircraft gunfire)
Aircraft crash explosion and smoke to emphasize gasoline igniting
Aircraft wreckage burning
Aircraft belly landing dust
Aircraft damage smoke and fire effects
Bomb250 explosions
Bomb1000 explosions
Large bomb explosions
Rocket (RS82) explosion effects
10kg bomb effects
Static smokes and fires
Tank, vehicle, trains, and objects explosions, smoke and fire
Napalm effects (hard to work with because the way the game is coded)

To install, place the Daves_Realism_Effects_v1.0 folder inside your mods folder. If you have other effects mods installed, you may not get the desired result.

FYI: If you have FPS or performance issues with this mod, DO NOT use the classfiles. Delete them.

First of all: many thanks for all your work with this!  :)
Felt in love with this when I watched the video.

Then I tested the mod in a very heavy modded 4.12 MA5.30
and a not so heavy modded one, both with BlackDeath.

Without this mod I have very good fps due to my Hardware.
See the specs below and read more here.

I have no conflicting eff mods or classfiles (classfile checker).

In the heavy modded 530 my fps drops down from ~58 to ~ 4  o_O
but only when the sky is seen on screen.
And in not so heavy modded 530 its not much better.

my first thought: distance mod.
So I disabled the 3 classfiles wich comes with your mod
(you mentioned them earlier here) and voila: all is good.
fps is abs OK now and I have all (?) this loveley effects.  ;D

But: wich effects from your mod needs this classfiles?
What do I miss when disabling them?
Are there any drawbacks at all?

I just watched the video and it looks really really good.
I am very impressed by the bomb blasts in particular, I will get to play with it tomorrow.

contains but just for the sake of variety, I want to try another version,
Your new effects package seems like a great choice. I will test it in the VP-Modpack.

Although I am also concerned with the fps drop if they are too "heavy". I would like to know what 3 classfiles
may be slowing it down as mentioned by SAS~Gerax ?

I tested this on a fairly heavily modded v4.12.2 with Modact 5.3. All the mods I'm running are maps, extra objects, aircraft, ships, or vehicles. I'll look into the FPS drop issues on a clean copy of 4.12 with Modact and see what happens. I had no FPS issues during my testing. I started working on this mod a long time ago, and the classfiles and flak puffs were the first thing I did, all I remember is using a process of elimination to figure out which classfiles I needed to increase the view distance of the flak puffs. Maybe someone with more knowledge can help me with those. For now, I recommend not using the classfiles until I can come up with a solution. Check back here for updates.
