Dear all,
Last November, In the days around his 99th birthday, I was fortunate enough to hold and record seven hours‘ worth of face to face interviews with my cousin Stanley.
While I was there, I posted this onto the SAS forum:
“A golden opportunity to put your questions to a veteran – but be quick! Master Pilot SR Chambers” https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,49123.msg542098.html#msg542098Several of you kindly responded with questions that I was able to put to him in the last session, and I hope you were all happy with the responses I posted up.
The interviews were a remarkable experience. Stanley is extremely lucid, and recalled an astonishing depth of detail, from his first day in the RAF in 1937 to 1945 and on to his retirement in 1958. He sometimes needed a bit of guidance towards topics, but there was practically no duplication – an extraordinary achievement for someone of his age.
I have just this week completed writing it all up. In almost every single case, his statements were confirmed from other sources (e.g. Squadron Operations Record Book). There were only minor divergences from published records.
What has emerged amounts to a major dissertation of 200 pages (45,000 words). I am having one copy properly bound for me and a second copy for Stanley (in RAF blue) to go with his telegram from the Queen – because on 21st November he will have reached his 100th birthday.
Now, I am interested ion the possibility of having it published in due course.
Does anyone in SAS-land have experience in publishing and especially for this subject area?
Thank you,
Bruce
Please note: I have separately asked for volunteers to skin specific aircraft that he flew during his career.
