If no map icon mod is available, I could supply mine...
« on: January 03, 2017, 10:42:41 AM »

A long time ago I made up a set of map icons to reduce clutter. Almost all are smaller, and a good number use partial transparency. The result is very much improved readability and less blockage of the underlying map. Much tidier and cleaner!

As you may know, these icons are shared by the FMB and in-cockpit maps.

Any interest?

Well then, Mike, I'll just have to pack it up and send it on, won't I! ;)

Download available over at Modworx...

...Or get it now:

The icon size setting in FMB I used for these screen grabs is 32. One could go as low as 16 for the tiniest size that there's any hope of discerning at all clearly. 64 is amply big for those with some vision impairment.

It's been a good 3 years that I've been using these, and so I largely forget the degree of improvement in detail. But I do remember it as being quite drastic. For the in-flight map, in crowded areas where many objects are present, as in towns for example, one still has a chance to make out the underlying roads and such. Previously the larger fractional area occupied by most icons, not to mention their complete opacity, made for a far more annoying 'blanket' effect in crowded concentrations of objects.

WxTech,  thanks, I downloaded the folder but am at a lost as to how to add it to BAT.  I don't want to jump to JSGME or #SAS\MAPMODs etc.  Appreciate your advice.

thanks again

By BAT, do you mean a batch file? If not, I have no notion of what you mean.

The common practice is to drop the folder into /MODS, so that the directory structure is:

IL-2 1946/MODS/Map_Icons/icons

Hoping that helps...

Thanks WxTech,  By BAT I am referring to the Battlefield-Airborne-Tactical Mod.  Looking through the folder structures and comparing BAT install versus HSFX install I find in HSFX does have a "Mods" folder but in the BAT install there are BATMODS but these are activated via JSGME and there is #WAW2/MAPMODS but it does not appear to be the right place for it.

I'll give it a try in the MAPMODs folder.

thank you

Update: I have compared HSFX, VPMOD and BAT versions of the game and identified that HSFX and VPMOD have large aircraft on their maps.  BAT already has small aircraft on its map. Currently I am using 2 copies of BAT mod of which one is for testing.  I experimented with putting the map icon folder into the testing version and compared the two.  Both versions of BAT Mod install are identical.  Does this means there is already a map mod in place.  I'll re-review the manual.

Looks like the map effects are from PAL's Minimap MOD which is already integrated into BAT Mod version of the game.

thanks again W
