Planes randomly explode by birth in QMB. Please Help
« on: January 19, 2017, 11:37:57 AM »

I have no idea about what is happening with my game, because sometimes the plane I choose to fly (in the case of the logfile it was a Ki-94, but it also happened on others like Ki-109 and all Zekes) born into a fireball ending the mission. Equally, when those planes are selected as AI, they will just stay in the air not moving and propeller also not working, only to disappear within one or two seconds. These problems seem to be happening randomly rather than being caused by corrupt files of several particular types. For example, the Ki-94 might be working when I am restarting the game and load it as my plane during the first time to start a QMB.

below is a logfile that I hope would provide some clue.

Code: [Select]

Is this problem so much rare that no one here has any clue about what could possibly go wrong?

Needed information are missing.
- what base game version you play.
- what mod activator and its version you've installed
- installed some modpack ? or not ?
- what single mods installed ?

From your error log .....
 1. BMP custom skin files you want to apply maybe over 1024x1024x256-index-color stock format, in example 2048x2048x16M-color called "High Resolution / Full color" format here.
 2. Your game looks like "High Resolution (HD) / Full color mod" is not installed.

Sorry for missing the info and here they are:

1. I am running a SAS VP Modpack
2. Modact is version 5.3
3. Single Mods are mostly individual aircrafts and the jet era themepack, as well as latest engine mod which is a prerequisite of Jet Era mod

Just patched up the HD texture mod and activated it, and the problem was still very much there. Latest victim was Ki-109. and logfile is as below

Both of your error logs about Ki-94-II and Ki-109, those lines are found.
Code: [Select]
INTERNAL ERROR: Bitmap 'PaintSchemes/Skins/Ki-94-II/Seahawk XE365.bmp' size: 0 != 512 | 1024

INTERNAL ERROR: Bitmap 'PaintSchemes/Skins/Ki-109/Seahawk XE365.bmp' size: 0 != 512 | 1024

Each errors are related to the skin BMP file "Seahawk XE365.bmp".
That maybe Royal Navy's Jet fighter "Seahawk" 's custom skin from its filename , so NOT FOR Ki-94-II or Ki-109.
I don't have just the skin file, but I think you've installed Ont_R's Seahawk HD skinpack from here?
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=46945.0

You have to install under THE aircraft own folder and not others'.
HD skin files need HD / Full color mod WORKING.
Even you think you've finished to install HD / Full color mod, if that way was incorrect ..... the mod doesn't work and it makes errors around HD / Full color skins and textures.

I did once install the seahawk mod, but I deleted it soon after finding the wrong texture in its landing gear, but forgetting to delete the seahawk skin folder as well, leading to the remanant of the skin file. I did't have any skin folder for either Ki 98 or Ki 109 in the paintscheme/skins folder, thus the skins for these two aircrafts must be the original one coming along with the mod itself. Having no idea about  why the game would attempt to load seahawk skin for these two Japanese birds, I just deleted the seahawk skin folder all together, but that still fell short of solving the born explosive problem and what confuses me the most is that the problem just happens randomly among some type of Japanese aircrafts whose files I have never touched. (including but maybe not limited to A6M whole series, D3A1, Ki-84, Ki-49).

Since none of the aforementioned aircraft is non-flyable all time, the possibility of corrupt files would be ruled out. Then the cause might be somewhere else. ( Thus far no such problem has been encountered in non-Japanese aircrafts, but I just dont dear to try.....)

Ah...

When you can enter QMB screen , push "Reset" button in it.

If even entering QMB is impossible, open your IL-2 installed folder by Windows' explorer file folder viewer and delete the file ".last.quick" in game root / Quicks / .

If still error will come, next, open game root / Users / doe (or some other named your player history folder) / settings.ini by notepad or a text editor application.
In it, the section of [skin] has your used skin names and the game may want to load them as default.
Deleting all the lines of the [skin] section (section title [skin] line has to be kept) ..... maybe OK.

I tried as advised but still no luck, but I found two interesting things.

1. The settings file as talked about under user folder is automatically regenerating the seahawk.bmp as the default skin to load each time I clean it

2. The aircraft explode into campaign in the same way (fuel tank explode), but the debris shows that the planes explode in their own default skins rather than the ghost seahawk.

Let's see how long we can keep this air crash investigation live on and whether we would be able to find the real culprit....Thanks for any help

Don't you install your game under C:\Program Files (x86)\ or other drive letters' \Program Files (x86)\ ?

Those Windows' default install places are protected by User Account Control and direct editing the files inside are canceled by Windows system forcibly.
We cannot change / edit files placed there ..... like your user settings.ini .
IL-2 1946 is a very old game application and developed much before the time of Windows implemented UAC in its version Vista. Every setting files are made in installed same folder, and conflicting UAC design.
This issue is talked again and again in SAS.

Your true setting folders and files maybe placed in your Virtual Store area.
That real folder path is C:\Users\ Your windows account name \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ , but opening there and editing there in each time is hard.
You are better to re-install IL-2 1946 from the first outside of UAC protected area like C:\Game\ .

Actually my game is installed in the rather harmless route of E:/ Il2-1946 VP Mod. Well, it seems that I raised a serious enough problem even to exhaust the wisdom of such a vastly experienced helper. Many many thanks indeed and maybe I have to just live with it.

I just made a latest attempt with another mod plane Ki-49, same fate of born into a fireball. but the logfile this time didnt mention the seahawk skin. Maybe the series of internal errors might indicate the cause.
