Anyone else play TGA(The Golden Age)?
« on: March 12, 2017, 10:35:07 PM »

I decided to post the topic here instead of in the TGA campaign area due to the question not being directly related to campaigns in TGA(though I will touch on that a bit).

Does anyone else besides me enjoy/mainly fly the TGA era? I love me some good Spanish civil war/alternate history interwar stuff! My favorite planes so far have been the I-16(all types) and the Fokker D.XXI(I mainly fly the Republican Spanish air force craft). On that note, are Monty's Campaigns for the Spanish Civil War compatible for B.A.T? I can't seem to get past the car mission in the Escape chapter of the whole thing. Any support/discussion/tactics around these planes are welcome! I'd love to know what other people like to fly in this era.

I have a few missions I made for relaxing.  Actually not war stuff.  A few examples.
One is circa 1937, Channel40 map, I ferry a military attache with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist from Biggin Hill to Paris and back.  Usually in a Miles Magister although it has to be Tiger Moth if the Magister is having engine maintenance.
Another is a Ford Tri-Motor (or other suitable type)  passenger run (Sidi-ifni map) I start in air with 50% fuel, make a stop to refuel (Pals refuel mod) and leg it out to the 'the Island' to drop off tourists.  I use the C&C Random Weather object so there is always a chance of a rough ride.
Pacific flying boat cargo runs are always nice.  I have been thinking of trying an air race mission against AI planes,  something like 'Paris to London' I hear that Supermarine has a new racer, or maybe a souped up Dewoitine 500?

i do, i also think that this module is good for some alternate/fantasy history but i fail in imagination... i need an inspiration  :)
speaking of real history, the interwar period was not really peaceful; there was the spanish civil war, of course, between 1936 and 1938 which was the "main event", but also a lot of minor conflicts around the world.

i've found this list:

Oh, yeah!  ;D I've been working my way through some of the SCW campaigns.

I've also been hoping that more Japanese aircraft of the period, including some now available only in WAW,  can be added to TGA. A surprising number of air battles took place over China prior to 1939. At present, however, there aren't enough IJA or IJN aircraft in TGA to replicate some of these battles.

Yes. I have been playing a few of Poltava's SCW campaigns. Currently I am playing his Aragon 1938 Mosca campaign. Great campaign!

oh yes? I thought that the SCW campaigns were not compatible yet with BAT07... so I'm gonna try it!

@Ehood
in WAW you have quite a lot of planes from the 30s, you can simulate the main battles between Russia and Japan with this module instead of TGA

They should work, because most of what you can find in the "IL-2 SCW" Mod Pack, aircraft, maps, objects etc (not least the C&C Mod) can now be found in BAT. But there is obviously no taxi-to-take-off feature in these campaigns, that have been made with 4.10.

So have a go, and please report back if they work or not! Maybe I can do something about problems in different campaigns, even though I don't run BAT, not right now in any case  ;)

I guess that would explain the broken AI that doesn't wanna take off in the Bulldog missions I tried. Is there any plans to add back in the taxi feature for the AI? That would be cool if that was true.

On another note the 20mm Masden gunpods for the D.XXI are AWFUL, as in they don't converge at all. Either pls fix or don't use them

I don't think that the taxi-to-takeoff-feature is the reason for the Bulldog not taking off. So the Bulldog AI aircraft just stand on the ground in TGA? They never take off? Haven't seen that in 4.10.

Hi Aliza,
Being Spanish, I've flown quite often in TGA, especially in SCW campaigns. Both my grandfathers fought for the Republican side and most of my relatives went into hard times when the war was lost, so I feel happy to pay a virtual hommage to them flying for the Spanish Republic.
Moreover, thanks to the wonderful maps by RedEye and Jir, I am able to fly over the city I live in and the places I daily drive to work or on holidays.
Concerning TGA campaigns, I agree with jpten. Apart from the Spanish Civil War, this module offers an unexplored world of classic passenger aircrafts and air races. I wish some people made such types of missions. Just for fun, I made a pair of alternate missions about sky pirates using seaplanes and hiding in desert islands (yes, 'Porco Rosso' style).

Regarding your problems with 'Escape' Monty's campaign... did you uncheck 'No instant success' in the difficult settings? I've just tried the first mission in the campaign (the one in which you have to drive a car), and it seems that there is no target object when you reach your objective, so you'll never obtain a 'Mission complete' message. If 'No instant success' is deactivated when starting the campaign, you can press Esc at the end of the mission and you will be able to skip to the next mission. Otherwise, I suppose that you will be stuck in the first mission since you didn't fulfill any targets.
Finally, in some missions I've also experienced AI refusing to takeoff, as you mention about the Bulldogs. I don't know the exact reason, but I managed that AI finally started they run by using Communications (TAB key) > Wing (or appropriate section) > Navigation > Start engines (or something similar, I don't remember the precise pathway). Sometimes AI is especially dumb.

Ill take a look at using SpongeBob's methods for taking off next time I get time to play a campaign mission in TGA. Ill post updates later
