B-17D wish for gunners
« on: April 29, 2017, 10:58:38 AM »

My poor old B-17D models get no love.  I can't even get in a position defend them with machine guns  :(
The D fought in many battles against Zeroes in the first few months of the Pacific War.  Many were based in Java (hint for the new Java map in the making by Farang).

Are there any pilots or gunners out there also wishing to have an improved B-17D with gun positions and maybe a bombardier position?

Is there any modder who can improve this plane?

Alas the D.  I'm a student of the early Pacific War too.  The B-17D...ignored, unloved, unrecognized...and didn't do much but patrol and move from base to retreating base...  What a babe though.

All gunner positions are manned in Modact 5.x.

Best regards - Mike

Thanks for the reply, Mike, but My 4.12 with Modact 5.12 does not have the waist gunners positions available.  I can only jump to the pilot, bombardier, and belly gunner.  It also has no bomb load options but maybe that's just my setup.

My VPmodpack has only the pilot and bombardier positions available - which is strange because it has Modact 5.3
This one does have bomb load options.

My 4.13 with Modact 6.1 has only pilot and bombardier positions available and with bomb load options.

The "D" was not just used for patrols.  It was used on many missions to bomb Japanese ships when it was based in the Philippines and later when it was based on Java.

I can confirm that in my BAT install the B-17D only has pilot and bombardier positions.

OK, now I know I'm not dysfunctional.  ;)
So, can this issue get fixed?  Maybe we can get some waist gunners imported from the other B-17 files.  Since D's didn't have a tail gunner, the pilot would weave the plane from side to side so the waist gunners could get a bead on the trailing Zeroes.  That could be quite a challenge  :o

I see this discussion has been moved to REQUESTS forum which is a more appropriate place.

Something I didn't mention before is that the D model also had a 30 cal. machine gun in the nose and two .50s in the topside compartment (I assume only faced rearward).

Excellent photo CZ.  Ain't never seen it afore.  The main north south road, here in Tampa, is called Dale Mabry Highway.

Cheers and prost

I mention "Dale Mabry", because Collin Kelly trained here at Drew Field.  He died in a B-17C.

Drew Field to the north, MacDill Field to the south.  Lakeland Linder field to the east.  B-26 pilots had the saying, before she was known as the "Widow Maker", "one a day in Tampa Bay".

still, cheers and prost

Waist MGs in the B17D most closely resemble the Waist positions in the PBY rather than the later B17s to my eye.
Great Request.
