Hi.

F7F-3 was a post-WWII variant. Earlier marks were produced before V-J day.

F7F-1 and F7F-2 are WWII aircraft (source: my library, not the internet).

Strictly speaking, F7F falls into WAW era (up to 1946 including). But as I understood from earlier discussions, BAT developers were cautious with adding more a/c into WAW which was already very populated. Someone pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Hope I'll not irritate anyone (admin?) by reviving the thread.

I used to consider F7F "post WWII" in terms of operational service. "Too late to enter the war", "the only combat usage as a night fighter in Korea", etc. - as many, if not most, online sources say.

However, I just found this:
VMF(N)-531, home based at MCAS Eagle Lake, Texas, would receive the first F7F-2Ns and later deployed to Guam in July 1945. From there the F7Fs were flown to Okinawa, arriving on the last day of the war. The only variant to see action during WW2 turned out to be the -3P variants, which first arrived in Guam in May, 1945 and forward deployed to Ulithi, Peleliu and Okinawa, flying operational sorties the last few weeks of the war.

If information above is correct, then F7F is fully "legitimised" to be included into WAW, isn't it?
There is no -3P variant in BAT (cameras + ADF antenna), but we can "imitate" photo recon with existing model, not speaking of "what if" scenarios.

I hope that BAT creators could think it over.
And if this bird appears in WAW at last - many thanks in advance.

According to US Naval strength report, dated 30 March 1945, VTN-52 had 5 x F7F-2Ns undergoing training to be combat ready by 30 May 1945.

Report 30 June 1945 does have VMFN-531 with 12 x F7F-2Ns at Eagle Lake; VMFN-532 with 11 x F7F-2Ns also at Eagle Mountain Lake; VMD-254 had 1 x F7F-3 at Greenville; Marine Fleet Air West Coast Command had 16 x F7F-2Ns and 24 x F7F-3s at Miramar, San Diego.

Report 4 August 1945:  1 x F7F-3 at Miramar, San Diego; 1 x F7F-2P and 6 x F7F-3P at Greenville (trained and ready for combat); VMFN-531 with 2 x F7F-1 at Eagle Mountain Lake., 2 x F7F-3s and 1 x F7F-2N at Beaumont plus 10 x F7F-2Ns at Eagle Mountain Lake; VMFN-532 had 1 x F7F-1 and 3 x F7F-3s at Beaumont plus 6 x F7F-2Ns at Eagle Mountain Lake; MAG 91 had 1 x F7F-3 at Cherry Point; VMF 911 had 1 x F7F-1 at Cherry Point; VMF-912 had 2 x F7F-1s and 5 x F7F-3s at Cherry Point

4 August 1945 report also list VF-19 with 48 x F8F-1s at Santa Rosa; CASU 5 with 1 x F8F-1 at Miramar; COMAIRPAC with 1 x F8F-1 at Pearl Harbor.

I'll have to search for information verifying the deployment of the aircraft but according to the Navy's strength reports, the F7Fs were  listed being in the U.S. with one squadron being ready for combat.

U.S. Naval Strength Report dated 7 September 1945:

VMFN-533 with 12 x F7F-2Ns at Chinu, California (but the actual squadron were flying F6Fs out of Okinawa.  (according to the Marine website: "In October 1945, the squadron moved to Peiping, China and soon transitioned to its next airframe, the Grumman F7F-3N Tigercat.) Other sources state that 14 x F7F-2Ns were ferried to Okinawa and arrived on 14 August.
VMD 954 (replacement training) had 1 x F7F-2P and 9 x F7F-3P at Kingston
VMFN-531 had 2 x F7F-1s, 3 x F7F-3s and 11 x F7F-2Ns still at Eagle Mountain Lake
VMFN-532 had 1 x F7F-1, 3 x F7F-3s and 7 x F7F-2Ns still at Eagle Mountain Lake
HEDRON MAG 91 had 1 x F7F-1 an d2 x F7F-3s at Cherry Point.
VMF-911, VMF-912, VMF-913 and VMF-914 each had 1 x F7F-1 all at Cherry Point
