Iraq Map - Download Link
« on: May 22, 2010, 02:59:22 AM »

Here's a download link for a new map of part of Iraq. The idea for the map came from Cracken and the populating was done by Riptide.

The idea was to have a map for the events surrounding the failed Axis coup of 1941. But for a 1/1 scale map of Iraq the area was simply far too large. So this is for the southern part of the country, where a British-Indian force concentrated efforts around the city of Basra. We provided a number of airfields that are in excess of historical airfields. Normally there should have been one airfield in Basra, but one is a bit sparse for a map of this size and besides, in a flat desert country almost any road can double as a runway if need be.

We've also provided a number of oilfields, located as far as we could tell in more or less correct locations for the WWII years.

There are 2 actors files for this map. Instructions are included on how to change these. The main actors is a whopping 7.5 mb in size. This may be surprising because outside of the immediate vicinity of Basra (which is an example of a finely executed populating by Riptide), there is little to see in the way of objects in number, certainly not in any concentration. But deserts are huge and swallow things up and all in all there are about a gazillion objects - palm trees and Egypt houses - scattered around the map, mostly in the vicinity of the main rivers. And to give some extra color contrast to the landscape, we decided to try lining the banks of the main rivers, Tigris and Euphrates, with random palm trees. We thought it best to stop with about 60% of the river banks done with palms or else who knows how large the actors would have become. But now the results look nice and don't interfere with frames rates either.

However for those with less powerful setups, we also provided an actors file without these palm trees along the river banks, size of 4 mb. Installation instructions are included and easy to do. It just involves editing one line in the load.ini file.

Try and find out which objects are missing from your static.ini with the static.ini checker:

Thanks, agracier... but my Norton refuses to let the static.ini checker work... considers it as a security risk and erase it every time I want to use it... GRRRRRRRRRRR !!!

Ha ha ... even software can become paranoid apparently ...

Anyway, here is the text from a post on the same subject, from AAA, on saving the Iraq ma. This should help some i hope, especially the last part about the static.ini.
But always remember, when trying out this kind of thing, always make backups first ...
_______________________________________________________________________________
I use UP2.0 ... but as usual there will be some newly added objects used that are not standard part of the UP2.0 pack ... and since these maps are an effort by several members, especially the populating, the objects used will deviate from standard install packs I suppose. Though all are from AAA or perhaps SAS ...

It's always useful to use the universal static.ini checker to see which objects are missing from your static.ini file.

Also, here are links to objects that often do not seem to be installed on many setups. This is not to say that all these objects are used in this particular map, but these are often the cause of not being able to fly/save. So it never hurts to have them installed.

There is also an issue of multi-storied Egypt houses i tried out. This is my fault. I tried adding some special features for Egypt houses, but apparently not all of the objects were removed. I will edit out these objects in the actors files, but that will take a while. Meanwhile this can be fixed though by adding the following lines to your static.ini file. A few posts higher this is described, but here it is again.

BUT BACKUP STATIC.INI FIRST!!

add these lines to your static.ini file:

[buildings.House$Egypthouse01HIGH]

Not only for the wonderful map, a big thank you for the missing static entries too..., I must admit that I never saw them, and I was pretty sure that I really had them all ... :D

I'm really sorry about those missing entries. They were something I saw on AAA once, on how to make multi-stories Egypt houses (or another multi-story house for that matter). You don't need to create a new object, you just duplicate the object in the static.ini, give it a new name and then adjust the height settings so that it apparently 'hovers' in the air above ground. The idea being to place a similar object, but not a 'HIGH' object, directly underneath it. This creates a multi-story house ...

Anyway, I started using the idea and then decided it wasn't worth the effort, mainly because it would involve users modifying their static.ini. A few of these 'high' objects must have remained in some templates I still had of Middle Eastern villages ...

But I guess modifying the static.ini is easier than editing the objects out by hand in the actors. I tried doing a batch find/replace with a text editor but it didn't work like it should have.

So, thanks for the patience you guys have shown too ...

Agracier....I love your maps...:)....but...

I build missions just for my own pleasure. Like to make my own movies and stories. But sometimes they just won't save. Since I found this problem with two of your maps (Dakar and Irak) I wonder what is the reason. It must have something to do with ground objects. It happened only when ground objects were involved....ships give no problem.    ???

Have you tried adding the entries to the static.ini as given in the above posts? You might also wish to check which items you might be missing by using the static.ini checker. And following is a list of objects that do not always seem to be part of modpacks.
