Decal/markings year question

Hi!
As I already asked this question in other forum, it seems that it is a really noob question. Basically, if I download a plane, is it possible to change the decals of a given plane? As in, a USAAF fighter has markings of a given year, and I want it to display the markings of another year. It's not like opening notepad and changing a few numbers, so, could you point me in the right direction?
