I would recommend DOF as that's where all the new WW I development is taking place....

Thanks all.    I had made more than a few early birds for FG,  From the summer of 2014 I've been encouraging active MP operations in FG based on WWI history and recreation of some big events like the BEF mustering from the Southern UK to cross the channel in old Longhorns, BE2s, Bleriots and other early planes in September of 1914.

Some early war planes I've built or modded:

HFarman 20

Fokker EI 80 hp Oberusal

Caudron CI or 10 meter trainer

FlightGear is a modern airliner sim and most online stuff is passenger jet related: usually hours of plodding across vast expanses of ocean.  It's sort of a badge of honor to have racked up hundreds of hours online. I don't get it because a lot of the time spent is letting the AP and Waypoint Director fly your aircraft.

It's a shame actually as the Corine sourced scenery mesh for Europe is best seen down low.

After a bit of a tussle I've got 4.07 updated to 4.10.1.   The question now is.. Can I add and or try flying some WWI aircraft before taking the plunge into either DBW 1916, or maybe the better, cleaner but much bulkier install of BAT DOF2?

I want to try out some of the WWI plane sets before doing a complete revision of my IL2 installation. Is this possible from a base 'vanilla install'?

BTW the .PDF for BAT is huge and doesn't play well with FireFox's basic PDF reader,  but Foxit opened it without problem, just a for instance note for those wanting to be informed, before going into BAT, you may want to read the tome .PDF.  It makes a great case for using BAT over a patched CUP install.  ( If I'm getting my terms correct here...? )

Basically Fester, CUP became BAT about a year ago. And because of a large group of dedicated and evidently intelligent individuals CUP transformed into BAT and has also grown enormously since it's "birth".

If you want to try out some of the WW1 plane sets the way I see it you have one of a few choices.

1. Install the DBW 1916 Mod or BAT to test,

2. find out if someone lives around you who has IL-2 BAT or DBW1916 installed on their PC,

3.take a quick trip over the border to where I live in BC CANADA and I'll be more than happy to give you access to my PC that has everything installed.  ;D

In all honesty, if you can chose go for BAT.

If anything, because it is based on a later game version, 4.12, instead of 4.10.
If you chose to download missions made in BAT DOF you will almost certainly run into compatibility issues at some point because many features for mission building are not available in DBW and will never because they are attached to the base game version. These missions won't be playable, maybe for the simple reason of a feature like "taxiing" is not in DBW.

You will save yourself frustration and sitting "in front of food with hands tied behind your back"

That's the reason why I'm following through with the downloads of all the BAT mods  the BAT manual paints a pretty compelling reason for avoiding DBW 1916.

I notice that the only map area for the present IL2 WWI mod(s) seems to be only the Somme area.(?)  It's really a small part of the entire WWI front, not to downplay the historical concentration of aerial combat that took place, but the Lorraine-Alsace, Marne, Verdun and Nord de Calais and North Sea fronts were quite interesting in their own local actions and aerodromes.

Is France/Belgium/NorthernItaly and Western Germany available as scenery mesh/maps in IL-2?  I'd like to make a few missions that have a different focus on the less well known areas.

Thanks Cloyd.  Looks like night bombing raids up the Saar valley are possible.   :)

Check out Uzin's Belarus 1916 it's one of my favourites and well worth perusing

In a fit of haste I've made a 4.01.1 install with the intention of patching the SAS Modact 3.03, unfortunately I think I've buggered something, the normal IL2.exe runs fine but when the Modact .exe brings up it's little selector it fails to launch the mod when you press the run button.  I've not added anything to the #SAS yet.

Somewhat disheartened by the volume of files needed to run BAT.  I've been able to just get about 30% or so because of download failures, yeah we have dodgy DSL here.

The good news is that my 4.12 install runs like a champ and it's very nice to look at, just no WWI planes.

I've got an old Frankendekker that was gifted from Mossie years back I'm making into a Austrian Fokker B-1 trainer

Here's a list of the WWI maps available in BAT:

Sorry for the full quote but I need this to make a point.

Be aware that you can use ANY map in ANY BAT Module. So in BAT DOF you can fly on ANY of the maps even the big ass Channel maps or the other western Europe maps.

Designated WW1 maps may be a bit more specific in terms of airfields or general locations of battles but you are in no way limited in BAT modules.
In fact, in BAT DOF all the concrete runways on later dated maps are replaced by grass strips, so this won't be a disturbing sight.

As for the downloads of BAT, you might want to try the torrent downloads. They are known to be more fail proof when download is no so great.

Thanks Vampire Pilot  Yeah I'm going to try a freeware download manager.  My experience with torrents on our internet connection is not been much better.

It's good to know about the scenery changes for BAT.   I've been working on a scenery patch for FG that reverts the modern material calls for the terrain classes, that thins out the suburban and industrial zones in FG and emulates a more early 20th century look to the city centers, adds more farmland and forest.

Here's something you might like.
