Overlays for National Markings on Aircraft
« on: April 23, 2019, 12:52:26 PM »

I am using Overlays for Markings for the first time, to enable the "Markings On" option.
Subject is the Blackburn Skua, further developments of the version recently released in BAT.

I have no problem yet getting Markings to appear on the wings and Fuselage.

Overlay8 should be for tail markings, but there appears to be no option for RAF style tail markings to appear.

Am I missing something, or is this a current game limitation.  --- or perhaps there is a special Paintscheme....class which enables this for the RAF?

Hello asheshouse, it has always been a peculiarity of the game that RAF tail flashes would not appear, most artwork made for the RAF included it on the skin. ;)

Now strangely enough to confuse things, if you select RAF for the Axis side you will get a tail flash. o_O

I had the same issue when I did the Lysander, for most nations it will add either insignia or numbers on the tail, however, not all nations have tail markings, try your Skua with another countries insignia just to test if your overlay is working.

As far as I am aware the Paintscheme type you add into the java and the overlay are connected to what will appear on your aircraft but I do not know if there is anything available that tells you what particular scheme you need to add.

I did the overlays for the Lysander as meshes in the folder because I left the option until late in the build so it was difficult to pick up a particular layer on the model.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Thanks for that tip. I see that, in VPModPack, if I select Blue/RAF Postwar then the tail flash is loaded correctly.
Same for RAAF and RNZAF.
Of course the Postwar country options are Mods -- done correctly.
The omission bug is only in the Stock game Paintscheme classes.

I guess this would probably be fairly easy for someone who understands the classes better than me to fix?

Overlay8 should be for tail markings...
I may be looking through many Class Paintschemes, but I don't see any use of Overlay8 for the RAF.
This overlay seems to be used for some countries (DE/RU/PL/HU/...) for numbering or swastika...  :-X

In the Forgotten Countries Mod -- or some version of it -- used in VPModPack, Canada has an RAF type Tail marking. CATail.tga
This is referenced in the PaintSchemes class.
There appears to be no reason that Overlay8 could not be added to the normal "Red"  RAF PaintScheme

I have solved this, and now have tail markings appearing on the Skua.

Solution as follows:

I've installed McWolf_DecalsShine, to give me a set of Decals to play with.
I've copied the CATail.tga into the British folder.

Edited the class file PaintSchemeBMPar01.class to include Overlay8 in the  British section --- and specified the same Paintscheme in the Skua classes.
Added Overlay8 to the model, and it all works ok.

Bravo ! Big bravo !

The McWolf_DecalsShine package is inaccessible. The links are "broken"!

Strange. It was working before, but now does not work for me either.

One thing has continued to bug me. That is that the roundel on the side of the aircraft is the same as the one on the underside of the wing.
For the Skua (and others) this looks looks wrong. The side of the fuselage should have the yellow surround to the roundel whereas the underside of the ring should not.

Solved. ---  In PaintSchemeBMPar01.class simply add a line for Overlay9 to use on the wing underside and reference the correct decal.
In the model add the Overlay9.mat  ---- It all works.

I cant think of any compatibility issues. Other models will continue to use the stock Overlays. For the Skua, if you select another country, then it will just not have any markings on the wing underside.    Anyone think of any problems with this?

---- or I could add Overlay9 to all the other countries and allocate the same decal as is used in Overlay7.
