Remake of Makin Atoll
« on: October 05, 2019, 04:11:05 AM »

I love Pacific Islands. So here is another remake of one of the older Il-2 maps: Makin Atoll.

I retexted the island terrain and expanded the airfield and added a small amount of objects, mostly airfield buildings and landing piers and supply dumps, a few lightly fortified/sandbagged positions and a heap of palm trees.

The land airfield has 2 separate runways. I've tried them out and you can simultaneously have 2 different flights active, landing, taking-off or doing both. Perhaps not strictly historical, but a bit of fun. One runway is longer and can handle twin engined planes, the other is shorter and should be reserved for fighters.

Here is a d/l link:

and the edmap, a simple affair for a simple map. screenshots to come later, there are a few in another post: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,62487.0.html

Aw, c'mon. We all know the title should be "Remakin' Makin."  ;D

Looking forward to seeing this in BAT at some point.

agracier, Thank you very much for an excellent map. Only one thing I noticed, There are 4 F4Us sittting on the beach. One of them is actually in the water, high tide I suppose, but it is wearing post WWII markings, more KTO, the one in the hanger just behind it, is marked as well. Not sure how I could get these out or if I even want to try. It's a swell map and I would not want to take a chance messing it up. Any ideas? once again, thank you for sharing with us.

Wow, you actually looked at and know the difference in markings? hats off.

To get objects out, the easiest way is to put the map in map-maker version of Il-2, find and delete the objects you wish deleted and then save. That way you have a new actors.static without those objects.

I tried to add some clutter to the map, as any area of military operations is usually one huge junkyard at first sight.

If you don't know how to use map-maker, let me know and I'll fire up the Makin map again and remove the objects. But remind me where they are located, top island or lower island?

Thanx agracier, I really like the idea of clutter, that helps alot. However don't know anything about, map-maker, just the sound of it scares me
They are located up north where the airfield is, at the north side of the field there is some Quonset huts, a hanger and 4 F4Us at the edge of the water and one in the hanger. I you could remove these a/c I place some stationary ones more toward the center of the field. Anything you can do will be much appreciated. Thanks again for a very nice map.

Here we go, an actors.static without the Corsairs.  Unzip and place this slightly slightly smaller one into the map folder and overwrite when asked.

agracier, thank you so much for the update. Sorry I haven't responded sooner, I'm in the middle of getting a new PC and win 10 is a steep learning curve for me. Again, thank you very much for the adjustment.

Thanks.

Making small Pacific island maps is quite fun. Since they are small it's possible to use the texture slots for small areas and so give the map a more detailed appearance. Also far less work ... ha ha
