Early Silver USAF F-5Es
« on: November 15, 2019, 09:17:04 AM »

Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone has made or is willing to make an F-5E skin, generic or with unit markings, in the silver USAF color scheme the plane wore when it was first unveiled.

Here are some pictures:

I'm also curious if a template has been made for this plane, as I would like to get back into skinning and this is one of my favorite birds. So far I've been unable to find one.

Thank you all.

Real life. According to wikipedia, it's a publicity shot from when the F-5E/F first entered testing with the USAF.

I did a pack of "silver" F-5s a year or so ago but did not include any US types.  Let me see if I can dust off one of those PSD files and do a USAF version.

I don't know who did it, not me.  I've never done anything original in my life.

that's the A variant. Believe it or not, the fuselages of the F-5A Freedom Fighter and F-5E Tiger II are substantially different, to the point where skins from the A don't fit the E.

Top is the A, bottom is the E. If you follow the ridge that comes after the cockpit, you'll notice that it smoothly transitions to the vertical stabilizer on the A version, while on the E it transitions into the fuselage, and the tail rises out of the top of the ridge. In IL-2 the models are different enough that there is very noticeable artifacting around the tail.
