Ryan FR-1 Fireball

Ryan FR-1 Fireball

The Ryan FR Fireball was a mixed-power (piston and jet-powered) fighter aircraft designed by Ryan Aeronautical for the United States Navy during World War II. It was the Navy's first aircraft with a jet engine. Only 66 aircraft were built before Japan surrendered in August 1945. The FR-1 Fireball equipped a single squadron before the war's end, but did not see combat. The aircraft ultimately proved to lack the structural strength required for operations aboard aircraft carriers and was withdrawn in mid-1947. (Wiki)

This is Kazunori Ito's Ryan FR1 Fireball updated for Flight Simulator X which I merely imported into IL-2 1946. All credit for this model is to be given to Kazunori Ito.

I've included a few extra skins in both 2048 and 1024 sizes. A template will follow a little later.

This has only been tested in BAT 3.7.2.

Oh, one true oddball to join the ranks of Allied 46! Nice choice.

Works fine in 4.10 / DBW as well. Lovely aircraft, fast and nimble, something that can keep up with the advanced 1946 Japanese fighters ... and obscure as well which is always a plus point for me ...

Nice work.

Wonderful! I guess this is really a subject for the "twins" category. Is there a way to fly on just jet or prop power alone?

Thanks for sharing this !

Cheers

Thanks! A very interesting aircraft.  Took me several test flights to get accustomed to the slow-revving jet engine, similar to learning the Me 262. Gotta go easy on the throttle during taxiing and takeoff or one truly becomes a Fireball.

I tried to test it and found a few items, which may need a bit of tuning?

The cockpit is the Meteor. It is placed too much to the front, in front of the propeller actually. Maybe it would help to introduce an additional hier.him for the Fireball pit where it is placed further back?

Also, engine management is kind of weird. The propeller engine seems matched to a jet engine as well and reacts to handling by igniting - even when looking at the throttle wrong it already ignites.
I never looked at a  mixed engine FM but there are a few, so I suppose it is possible to pair that engine with an actual radial engine FM?

I suppose you should fly this thing by setting the jet to a certain setting and leave it alone most of the time, only operating the piston engine in flight?

Thank you very much for this plane. It was an interesting construction, transitional between piston and jet aircraft.
I am glad that this plane appeared.
The funniest thing is that he can be in the section he is in, but he can also be in Twins and Jets.
greetings
Seb.
