Question on what sound system is used
« on: January 04, 2020, 03:52:11 AM »

G'morning guys, been thinking about a new pc but got very confused on the issue of sound. In the old days one simply bought an internal sound card and a couple of speakers and that was it.
But now I see internal or external soundcards, speakers or headsets and 3d on-board sound on some motherboards. I'm now on an 'in-between' computer, but I had a soundcard and a 5.1 speakerset,
further I'm using track-Ir and a butt-kicker. Can you please tell me your sound configuration and how it works for you.

Hi,

If you are trying to keep things simple, I would suggest you look at a motherboard with an integrated soundcard. You can get really good quality ones these days. Just make sure it has surround if you want it and a separate aux out to drive the buttkicker would be preferable (rather than using the splitter).

I'm into recording music, so I actually have both an internal (on motherboard, Realtek) and an external usb one as well (focusrite 18i20). I also have a wireless headset (arctic pro).

The sound quality is  pretty good from all of them. Certainly the headset and Realtek are fine for gaming. I need the focusrite to drive my monitors and it has lots of ins/outs for equipment.

When I play Il2, I use the headset and also send the sound to the Realtek, which drives my Buttkicker. I use software from VB audio to manage this and split the sound how I want e.g. add more bass to the buttkicker.

It's free/donationware: https://www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/banana.htm

Hope that helps!

Regards,

M

Hi Marcost, yes this helps, thank you. Specially the Buttkicker info, I was never 100% satisfied with how it worked when using the splitter.

No problem, I should also have said that if you have trackiR ( I do s well), then I would definitely consider a headset.

I got a wireless headset and converted my trackir headclip to wireless as well, following some instructions I found online. Just googled and can see that Trackir sell a wireless version now.

Let me know if you decide to go the headset/mobosound/VB-audio route and I'll tell you how I set mine up to play the buttkicker through the mobo sound card whilst also playing to the headset.

Ok, thanks for the offer, but it can take some months before I have decided what to buy.  :-[
