Why isn't the Martin Mars skinnable gents?
« on: January 09, 2020, 11:49:18 PM »

Morning aces and friends alike,

The title speaks for itself, with the advent of the Martin Mars flying boat which I have to admit is a mod I've ALWAYS wanted in IL-2 as I did grow up watching her on VHS documentaries back in the 1990's, but I I understand she was ported from an outside source rather than made from scratch like the Sunderland was as from what I've seen on screenies that she uses the Porcupine's cockpit as well as flight model...  :-|

But surely due to her simple 3D she should be able to be skinned? But if she can't be that's no problem... I would however like to know if she comes with any separate skins anyway like her classic WWII US Navy to her up to date Coulson firefighting skins of today please :)

All the best and godbless to you all!

your title's a bit wrong, mate...
if it ISN'T unskinnable, then it IS skinnable, according to what you typed.
so you might as well ask 'why is it skinnable'... which is sure to elicit a few puzzled looks... :D
it's clear from the post that's not the question, but good enough to give me a little chuckle, nevertheless... 8)

From what I can see inside the plane folder the aircraft uses six tga files to make up the aircraft overall colour scheme, it will be necessary to paint each of those in a new scheme to alter the existing one I am sorry to say. ;)

This aircraft was made originally for a different sim/game and that is the way its author painted his creation, each section seems to be on the different tga files rather than all on the one as is the norm in IL-2 1946, to make it like ours would mean taking each of the main meshes that build the overall shape into a 3d program and transferring/re-doing the mapping onto a single file, quite an undertaking as you would have to make sure all sized up together accurately and then produce a new template from that to add all the lines and rivets as well as the new scheme.

Best bet might be to find where this came from and see if the original author made and posted any alternate colour schemes for his/her model, you could only use one version at a time but better than nothing.

Hope that helps.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Thankyou for explaining that Pete, it's a shame she has separate TGA files... but maybe in the future you guys can have a complete file in the future once the file and 3d is sorted...  ;D

Godbless mate,
