Raising gunsights...
« on: January 14, 2020, 05:42:04 AM »

Thanks to the key help of Storebror and the teachings of WxTech, I am beginning to realize an old dream of mine: to bring the gunsights to the right position they had in real planes.

Now it's up to Bf 109; here are the first results on Emil:

for comparison, an historical image:

and a photo shot from the inside:

It's not necessarily always the same:

Of course!

But that's a scheme, the two photographs I posted above are real life. But the true reason is... that I prefer the higher POV: not only improves view during dogfight, but also gets better vision of the whole scenery in every situation (takeoff, landing, formation flight, etc.), try it for yourself:

But that's a scheme
Don't jump to judgements.
Zoom in on the full scale image and you'll see that it's from a real life photograph.
Retouched, colorized, with text added, that's all granted, but still.

... it's from a real life photograph..

By "scheme" I meant a graphic system that optimizes the identification of the elements, even at the expense of realism, as can be deduced from the heavy graphic processing of the image.

Perhaps it can be assumed, given that it is undeniable that the gunsights are at different heights, that this device was adjustable, and it also seems that the pilots preferred it rather high.

MC.202

Actually, not entirely my work: I exploited an option offered by WxTech's San Giorgio gunsight, fixing an issue about its reticle and lowering bonnet to avoid gaps.

While MC202 and KI-43 seem OK, 109 doesn't seem practical at all when raised this much. Did you try to dogfight with it ? Gunsight glass overlaps with upper windshield frame, which is not the case in the RL pictures.

Gunsight glass overlaps with upper windshield frame...

Lowered gunsight by 1 cm:

Thanks for your comment.

My pleasure, thanks for your work.

Looks much closer to RL picture, but again, is it practical ?

We don't fly the aircraft with the same perspective as the pilot, our virtual camera has us seated quite low. I'd think the pilots adusted the gunsight in relation to their own eye's height. If it's still practical to fight with then perfect, if not I'd rather have it lowered a bit more. Do the shells still go through the center of the reticle ?
