US Target Banner
« on: February 04, 2020, 07:08:25 AM »

Enjoying the new BAT 3.8. I like the way the banner's towing plane complains if you accidentally hit them. lol.
Can you adapt the target banner to say be towed by a biplane as a written message, as they did in the old days for advertising. Or is there somewhere else this has been created for our use.

This mod is developed by mace, who most likely will release it stand-alone in the future as well.
Theoretically I suppose one could do other things as well.

It must be remembered however that the towing aircraft must be specifically primed to be able to tow a glider. I modded a few of those in BAT.

Thanks Vampire. I was thinking maybe of an Avro 504K towing an advertising  streamer during a between wars airshow.

Hi Mace. Is there a way I can set up your Avro 504K to tow a banner to say 'Go Bert!'. Do you have a programme where we can use various wordings as well as various aircraft.

please do not abuse Tech Help for requests or WIPs.
I move this to lounge.

Each aircraft has to be modified in 3do to be able to tow something. But the text is most probably going to be just a "skin".

Sorry Vampire. I thought my questions were a natural follow on in the thread. My misunderstanding.

larschance, thank you for your questions.

The banner message is nose art and I've put together a simple template (currently in .psd only) that will allow people to create their own messages. Message limit is 35 characters (including spaces). The aerial banner has basic movement animation and I have tweaked the target banner's flight model so any AI controlled plane (from Avro 504 to F-16) can tow a message banner (or target) without any modification.

As with any 'one size fits all' solution, the manner in which the banner sits behind it's AI tug varies. You can also set the tow distance via loadout as either 100m, 250m, 500m, 750m or 1000m but again, distance accuracy will vary from aircraft to aircraft.

The target banner's loadout selector allows you to choose four different towed objects - target banner, target decoy (for radar gunnery), target drogue and aerial message.

I'll raise a WIP thread with an alpha version for testing by the end of March.

cheers mace

Thank you Mace. Great to know it can be done. Well done. I know it will thrill my aged friend.
I was hoping to use it before my 94 year old friend loses his eyesight, which began to fail last year. I wonder if he is the oldest user of Il2 1946 BAT381 TGA. He prefers the non military years of the 1920s and 1930s when he was a little boy and awed by the aircraft he saw.
