Interesting article re rotary aero engines – challenging myths – particularly as it contains the expertise of people who actually fly them:
https://www.historynet.com/the-truth-about-rotaries.htmThe gist is that there is no historical inaccuracy for us to use the throttle on all rotaries with the exception of the Gnome. As a result I now do so with no feelings of guilt!
I also have a pilot setting for Gnome engines based on the description of altering the cylinder firing sequence to adjust engine speed: I disabled the sliding throttle, but use a four-way switch on my CH Throttle as follows:
Setting 4 – 100%
Setting 3 – 60% (should actually be 50%, but I find the planes typically will not hold altitude, so 60% it is)
Setting 2 – 30%
Setting 1 – 10%
Actually not many of the DOF planes used the Gnome, below is an incomplete list:
Morane-Saulnier G
Morane-Saulnier AI
DH2
NieuportN4
Nieuport 28
Sopwith Scout
Sopwith Pup (Home Defence a/c only)
Avro 504 (Some)
Camel (Some)
