what you can do to minimize your freeze problems is to use texture compression that will reduce the workload and memory needs of your GPU in conf.ini use:
TexCompress=2 
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

I've had better luck with UltraPack, where I'm able to set the RAM to 1024 MB, but I've got so many high-quality textures and effects added to BAT that it's no surprise I get stuck sometimes.

You can do the same with the selector in BAT even though that i am better off using 768 it all depends on the overall memory of your system.
