XP-67 Moonbat
« on: February 11, 2021, 09:12:33 AM »

As I was watching some You Tube videos, I watched one on the XP-67. I thought wtf why not.
Found this old request:  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,12876.msg134843.html#msg134843
Started to futz around in Blender. May take a long while to get the look right. But, I got a starting point.

Now THAT is a shape! Beautifully designed... was this a competitor against the P-38?  :-|

No, it was the same RfP that produced the XP-55 Ascender: Request for an high altitude interceptor. The designs were all inferior to the new jets and I think no contract came of the whole RfP since the war was practically over already.

Yep VP...just off the top of my moronic head...wasn't at least 1 built?

[ahem...wiki check..."at least" 1 was built.  Cheers and prost.]

[ahem, ahem...interesting read, wiki.  Read this afore.  It was underpowered and the motors caught fire.  Yep...I remember reading this story from way back.  Nice choice Zflyer.  I really do...love the anomalies that could have been.  Nice choice.  Prost.]

Too bad the USAAF got their grubby fingers involved dictating what powerplant was to be used, Continental XIV-1430s which went on to power some impressive aircraft... like none. James S. McDonnell proposed functional engines like the Allison or Merlin with turbo jets, but the USAAF lost interest and the project floundered and failed. The same thing happened again to McDonnell with the F3H Demon when the Navy dictated that the under powered Westinghouse J40 was to be used, hampering its performance giving it the moniker "lead sled."

As Zflyer stated, just go to youtube and search xp-67. Very cool. By the way, what is a "compensated" 37mm cannon?

Thankyou Vamp for clearing that up. Granted in 1944 it seemed the USAAF noted their current arsenal of aircraft could be used to defeat Germany and of course they did, it's a shame the prototype was destroyed and not preserved. I have to admit as well the broadness of her prop blades dwarfs that of the P-47 which were a wide panel design as well as others. They'd give her tremendous acceleration at medium to low altitudes, as I read as well in the comments she was going to be fitted with underpowered engines and as quoted similar to the F-3 Demon naval fighter, shame really as both generations could have been workhorses but let down by spec recommendations by the higher ups and designers.

Still I hope she does appear in our simulator soon and fitted with the 6 37mm cannons in the nose and inner wing sections she'll easily rival and possibly outclass the Bf-110G series and Me-410 types.

Smoothing out the Blender model. Contours are a little twitchy.

Using the FM & Classfiles of the F7F-3 Tigercat I did a mock-up of the Moonbat in DBW. Just a teaser.
Several weeks will pass before a Beta.
