WIP - Formosa Basic Map v.1.1
« on: September 03, 2009, 03:35:22 AM »

I thought it might be interesting for members if I put a link to a finished basic map of Formosa.

This means that while the map works, it does not have objects populating the map nor the correct number or location of airfields. Other than that, along with possible modifications to the look of the FMB map, it is as good as finished.

Hopefully someone would like to take over with populating cities and villages. If not, I can always at a later date do some simple populating of the map, mainly by copying and pasting from other maps. But this I really don´t like to do.

Also, if anyone has any airfield data on Formosa during the war, or any other suggestions, don´t hesitate to share so that I can incorporate it into the map.

I am presupposing members know how to install a map. Add the map directory ag_Formosa to your own map directories under ...MODS/mapmods/maps/ ...

Add the textures to you land/summer texture directory ...

Add a line to your all.ini file
ag_Formosa ag_Formosa/load.ini

Nice, agracier. I might have a go at doing some populating, although I'd also need a bit more info on the area... 8)
Quick question: you say the textures should go in the Tex/land/summer folder. Is that right, or should I put them in the Tex/land/summer/agracier sub-folder?  :)

This one I made simple ... just put the textures in the regular ...MODS/mapmods/maps/_Tex/land/summer ... directory.

No special directory for textures for this map until a more definitive version ... besides, maybe the map might need new or different textures for certain parts of terrain ... can´´t really say much about that now. I am still not home and am working off the cuff sort of ...

No worries, I've had a look at it, and I really like the textures you've used. Even though I'm not all that familiar with the area, it has a nice feel to it.  :D

Thanks again agracier. ;D

There were 50-70 airbases on Formosa, most of them were small strips apparently, but the Tainan complex was large. The place names have mostly changed though so finding them can be tricky, I'm still trying to track down where many of these places actually were. The larger and/or notable bases were:   Einansho, Hsinchu, Karenko, Koryu, Koshun, Matsuyama, Shinchiku, Tainan, Takao (Kaohsiung), Toko (Seaplane Station), Toshein, and Toyohara Airfields.

Other targets on Formosa were Kagi, Shoka, and Chosu, towns with large railyards; Takao, Yulin Kan Bay, Kaohsiung and Keelung were important ports. The 5 railway bridges linking Keelung to Kaohsiung were considered important targets. And the Hsinchu oilfields in the northern part of the island.

Keelung was probably the most important port:

Quote
Our own shipping-intelligence data, analyzed at Washington, indicated that Keelung had an average of forty-eight ships in port per week at that time, traveling under great hazard in order to keep supplies moving southward to Japan's front lines, and foodstuffs moving northward to Japan proper. American photo reconnaissance in 1944 showed a crowded harbor.

The codename of the proposed invasion of Formosa was Operation Causeway, and it was hotly debated in Washington when to invade the place, they didn't invade it after all but Nimitz considered it to be more important of an invasion target than the Philippines even and it wasn't until November '44 that they decided to not invade Formosa at all. In fact, some Navy planners wanted to skip Okinawa too and go straight for Kyushu, which would have been...interesting in a Chinese curse sort of way without taking care of either Okinawa or Formosa first, in my opinion.

There's a lot of info on Formosa scattered around, the problem is getting the place names lined up since some are old Chinese, some are Japanese and some are new Taiwanese. Adding to the trouble is Allied reports tend to mix the Japanese and Chinese names into the same report, sometimes in the same paragraph willy-nilly.  :-\

Still trying to get a "Population Volunteer" from among my guys, but everyone seems to either be busy, or terrified of learning new tricks. :D :D

very good info on names and airfields ... and on the presence of oilfields ... never would have thought there to be oilfields in Formosa ... should make for a nice touch ...

I suppose this means some additional changes to rivers and all, with the bridge targets, but that is doable.

Thanks for the info ...

Glad to be of some help, just wish I could find the long and lat of those airbases.

The oilfields weren't very large but the main reason the Japanese went to war was for natural resources, any oil to be found on any territory they controlled was exploited as best they could. Basically before they went to war the only "home" produced oil came from some small fields on Hokkaido and this one on Formosa. Everything else was imported and combined Japanese daily production was only somewhere around 80,000 barrels per day. And since the oil needed to be shipped in tankers since neither were connected to the industrial heartland of Japan by any land route, that caused them even more headaches.

Formosa was also one of the major food producers of the Japanese Empire, there were farms all over the place, and when the American blockade really clamped down in '45 it was one of the few Japanese territories that didn't have any food shortages, the problem instead was that they couldn't get the food from Formosa to the Home Islands. There were also aluminum, bauxite and iron mines on the island as well as several chemical factories and refineries. So Formosa was pretty important to the Japanese war effort all around, so much so that in 1945 (I believe, it could have been in very late '44) the Japanese actually extended Prefecture status to Formosa making it an official "home territory" of Japan, with representation in the Diet.

That was something that made some of the native Formosans (as opposed to Japanese colonists who started setting up there at the end of the First Sino-Japanese War) happy, but annoyed many of the others, to the point that US targeting maps actually divided Taipei City into sections showing where the native Formosans lived and worked and where the Japanese government and colonial administrative sections were so that raids would only hit the later.

Which is all probably more than anyone ever cared to know about Formosa in WWII. :D

I'm trying to remember which map had the Spain textures included on it, anyone remember?

Once you find that Daniel, you'll be able to download it, put the textures into your _tex folder and it should work. But for the life of me I can't remember which map had them in.  ???

Looking at the populating thread now too and seeing what the findings are there about that to try to get someone from my squadron to "volunteer" to do it. :D

Hello, I installed the Map. When I wanted to load the map, I got an error message:

World.land().LoadMap()error:java.lang.RuntimeException:
Landscape'ag_Formosa/load.ini'loading error

What have I done wrong? ::)

(Translation with Google translator) :)

Sch an error message usually means there is something wrong with the placement of textures. Probably, the associated texture files are not in the correct place.

Load the map again, and when it gives the error message, hit the 2 kepys shift+tab simultaneously. It will give a much longer string of text and somewhere in there will be a more detailed error message.

Read that and see if you can find out what is wrong.

Also - this is cause of many errors with textures - check that you have the correct forest textures installed on your system.

They should be in ...MODS/mapmods/maps/_Tex/forest/summer ...

Many people forget abut forest textures or don't have the whole range installed.
