The LaGG-3RD... What the heck is it?
« on: June 24, 2021, 10:17:34 PM »

This thing has confused me since I first started playing IL-2 1946 in pre-BAT days. What the heck is the LaGG-3RD? I mean, yeah, I get that it's a stopgap jet with the same idea as the Yak-15, but... I mean, yuck. This thing is the worst and most sluggish jet in the game, and I can't find any historical references for it. I can find more info about a jet conversion for the P-47 that was only a passing suggestion than I can find for this oddity.

Is it entirely fictional? Is there a redeeming quality that I'm not seeing?

See also related wikipedia entries for the La-150 and La-160.

I think the Lagg-3RD is entirely fictional. There may have been proposals but this never was a real plane (for all I could dig up when I was looking it up some point in the past).

Take it as a very early "tech demonstrator" prototype plane or testbed or trainer fictional.
It's operational use is... well, limited may be an overstatement already.

The La-15x designs are all nose-wheel, bubble canopy designs already and not exactly what the LaGG-3RD in game represents. If anything, the Lagg-3RD appears to be an even earlier concept stage for those.

It's the Gudkov Gu-VRD version 4 of 1943, also known as Gu-1 aka LaGG-3RD-1:

A design study for the 1st jet powered russian fighter to be built, rejected in Match 1943.
Gudkov was working on the LaGG-3 before, that's why the design.

Other interesting hints re Gudkov jet projects. Note the large, vaned intake splitter in some of these, and another prop-driven, mid-engine design clearly based on the Bell P-39:

If you can't cherish taking on a bunch of late 109 G6  with it, then you haven't truly played Il-2 1946 :P

(I added it to TGA because I think it fits the bill of "crazy scientist invents plane without propeller!" in 1930....)
