Potez 540
« on: July 29, 2021, 10:21:23 AM »

Here is the Potez 540 flying along serenely:

Now here is the pilot's view. The front gunner fills almost the whole windscreen and blocks his view but if you look at the first picture you can see that the gunner hardly sticks up at all.

Is there any way to reduce the size of the gunner so the two views are closer to a match and the pilot can see the way ahead? As it is I find it very difficult to fly the plane. I have tried any fix I can think of but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

Friend, I believe that the only way to change that is to alter the 3d cockpit model. I did a quick search, and came up with more than one artist who created this plane. Here are the threads, and if this isn't something you can do yourself you might contact these modders to see if anyone would be interested in making your suggested change to the pilots view. I also noticed that this plane was an import from Flight Sim X. (External) It seems that DreamK created the pit for it. Unfortunately, there are no settings (other than turning the cockpit off and going "Wonder Woman") that can alter the cockpit itself.
Good Luck!

I should have been more specific. You can find this same cockpit without the gunner in the Amiot 143 so, in theory you just give the Potez that cockpit and you are away. Unfortunately if you try this you have to put the new cockpit in WAW marked as 'Potez540' (inside 3do cockpit etc.) and let it overwrite the default Potez 540 cockpit. It doesn't work. I am pretty sure this is because the game sees your blank cockpit glass and thinks there is nothing there so it puts in the default file with the gunner. I have met this problem elsewhere.

As far as I can see there are two ways forward. The first is that someone finds a way of stopping the game doing that; the second is that you somehow alter the air.ini entry for the Potez so the game thinks it is a separate aircraft and doesn't try its default cockpit trick.

I hope all the above is not disrespectful to the people who made the Potez in the first place. The whole point of making this change is that the Potez 540 is such a great plane and I want to make it even better. If it wasn't a winner I wouldn't be bothering.

The problem is the classfiles that define which cockpit is used plus the hier.him of course...
In that case it would be interesting what the log says when you substitute pits...
What happens when you do so?

Griffon that looks wonderful - exactly what I was looking for. How do I get this great solution?

Better?

In case you raised the pilot segment, can you show me a side view out over the wings?

bottom line: as Andy has suggested and Epervier has seemingly confirmed, if you play around with values in the hier.him, you end with a lowered gunner, but with a marked gap between the wings and the fuselage where you can see through, when you look out of the left window and zoom out;
granted, I dont to that very often, in fact I have not flown the 540 before, I only shot at it so I did not notice any weird stuff in its cockpit;

so while you gain a better view over the nose with the smaller gunner, you get a rather weird looking gap in the left wingroot, where you can see through and backwards in the game;
depends on what you prefer now;

values to change are these:

[Root]
Mesh Root
Parent _ROOT_
Attaching 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0.75 -0.1 -0.75

change the 0.75 -0.1 -0.75 to whatever you like between 0.55 -0.1 -0.55 and 1.12 -0.1 -1.12) the last three values are the original ones as in the original hier.him

0.75 gives the best compromise in my opinion between height of front gunner turret and wingroot gap in standard view - zoomed out the gap only grows

as said, just as you prefer....

on a sidenote, is there a way to get the Goertz bombsight and bombardier view from the Potez 540 into the Amiot 143?
the French used the Goertz extensively in their bombers and it was even preferred to the Norden as it was easier to operate and of all things more accurate than the Norden when employed by the rather low flying slow early war Allied bombers according to some sources...

I have changed the values in the hier.him as you suggest. I can live with the gap in the wing - it was the forward view I wanted sorted out. Thank you very much for solving my problem.

I have had a go at solving your bombsight problem but without success. I'm afraid it is a bit above my pay grade!

no problem, I guess thats a classfile thingie that determines, which bombsight is called into use...
as I have never used one of the French bombers, let alone one of their bombsight, its not even worth of further consideration to exchange the Amiot 143 bombsight
