Fire Over Sicily Part 5: Reggiane Re2002 Ariete
« on: August 29, 2021, 10:50:38 AM »

This 12 mission Re2002 campaign is the fifth in a series of campaigns for Italian fighter aircraft over Sicily in 1943. The campaign is available for download here: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=2983

History and Background by Lars
The Reggiane Re2002 Ariete ‘Ram’ was a fighter-dive-bomber developed from the Re2000 local defence fighter. The latter was used successfully by the Hungarian Air Force as the Heja. It also equipped one unit of the Italian Air Force as a convoy escort and local defence fighter. It also was used as a catapult fighter aboard the Italian Navy warships. By 1943 the Re2000 was no longer in the front line but Allied aircrews often mistook the Re2002 for a Re2000 as they looked alike.

The Re2000 was loved by its pilots and the qualities happily transferred to the Re2002 with its more powerful engine and bigger warload. 201 Re2002s were built and issued to the 101 and 102 Gruppi Tuffatori.
In its main role as an anti-shipping strike aircraft it was competent but unfortunately the timing of entry into service meant facing overwhelming numbers of Allied opposition. It was also called on to make up the numbers of intercepting fighters who were taking on the Allied mass bombing raids.

Installation
This campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available at the SAS website (see readme for download link).

It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.

Extract the FOS_Re2002.zip file to a temporary directory.
• Copy the decompressed Missions folder and the decompressed PaintSchemes folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
• In the New Pilot Career page, choose Regia Aeronautica in the Air Force selection drop-down. Choose Fire over Sicily Part 5: The Re2002 Ariete in the Career drop-down.
• We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
• The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

Credits
Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack. This campaign uses Command and Control and Trigger functions that were recently added to BAT.

We also thank the skinners out there. They bring a lot of life and realism to IL-2 missions everywhere. We could not identify the originators of all the skins we used in this campaign, but these we know:
• G55 - Stefano and Max the Hitman
• MC202 - abraxa and serval
• G50bis - Boelcke and stanislao
• Re2005 - sakai
• Re2001 – Metratron

Glad you like them Andy. This is the toughest one yet so you should practice shallow bombing ships in QMB to ensure direct hits. Dive bombing usually breaks this fighter up. Don't try for any warships bigger than the CL class as even a direct hit does not sink or even damage it. This was also a problem in real life so I read.
