Hello everyone!  I am letting you all know that I am re-working the list to get rid of duplicated aircraft entities.  For example, SDB-3 and 5 will be under “Dive Bomber / Scout” instead of having duplicated SDB-3s and 5s for Dive Bomber” and “Scout”.  Same thing with the rest of aircraft for various nations.

At the same time, I have been learning about USAF / USAAC and USN designation system and their changes through era, I am giving each aircraft the proper names.  For example, for WAW, you see Pursuit, such as P-47s, P-511s, etc.  But in Jet War, you will see F-47 and F-51 instead of P-47s and P-51s, to represent the accurate of USAF designation after 1948.  Same thing with USN.  You will see two names for certain aircraft that goes through the changes with designation system.  For example, for F-4B, you will see F4H-1 / F-4B Phantom II.

And for the fictional aircraft, I changed their names to give them more authentic names as possible.   For example, for P-38T (Naval), I named them as F2O-1, since O (Changed to ‘V’ in 1951 until 1962) is reserved code name for Lockheed.  In US Navy designation system through the Second World War until 1962, thery set this way:  (Mission role) (Number) (code name of aircraft company) - variants / sub variants.  And in IL-2 1946, you will see her as F2O-1 (Model 822).  Historically Model 822 is Lockheed proposed navalized P-38 project for US Navy.

When the new version of mod for BAT v4.2.2 get released, it will be announced here.  I am doing this project slowly as my hobbies.  I hope it will finish by end of December.

Cheers!

Hello everyone!

Report for today:

After spending a few days working on aircraft list for WAW module (BAT 4.2.2), it gave me opportunities to study the designation system for both USAAF / USAAC and USN / USMC aircraft.

Here are the links for anyone who wants to learn more about USAAF and USN designation system:

List of United States Air Force aircraft designations (1919–1962) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Air_Force_aircraft_designations_(1919%E2%80%931962)

List of United States Navy aircraft designations (pre-1962)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_aircraft_designations_(pre-1962)

With the understanding of both USAAF and USN / USMC aircraft designation, I am able to further improve the aircraft naming for more historical accurate names.  This also gave me an idea of what to name fictional aircraft in realistic ‘what if’.  I do my best to make the aircraft names being historical and authentic that will improve an immersive experience.

However, if I were a developer of simulation, I would implement such system that would allow you to add alternative aircraft names to any aircraft, which is tied to the nations, nation’s military branches, and/or the years.  For example, if selecting aircraft from aircraft menu, if you select USN, you would see F4F Wildcat, but if you select FAA, it would show up as  Martlet Mk. IV instead.  That would be awesome to have in IL-2 1946 too.

Anyway, back to the topic, th aircraft list is now completed for WAW and I am moving on to other modules.  When all modules are completed (DOW, TGA, WAW, and JTW), it will be announced here.  I am taking my time to go through the list carefully and ensure I don’t miss anything especially with the testing to make sure it runs solid with BAT v4.2.2.

Hello everyone!

A report for today:

TGA (The Golden Age) module version is now completed. I am moving on DOF (Dawn of Flight).  There have been major clean-up so there is no more cloned aircraft codes.  The reason why I won't use cloned aircraft entities in air.ini:  When you select one of the duplicated aircraft name (based on air. codes in air.ini), after that and when you decide to look at aircraft list again, it will glitch by jumping to another location where another duplicated name are.  Unless there is a way to fix it, I want to avoid the glitches.

Hence is why as stated in the previous post, any aircraft that have more than one role, have multi-role names.  For example, SDB series are under "Dive_Bomber_/_Scout", since SDB series have the roles of being dive bomber and scout.

Sorry for the late reply.  I was gone for months due to the real life situation.  It is recent that I return here and started working on updating AAL for BAT v4.2.2 Hotfix 3.  By the way, the new version is released today.  If your BAT still crash on start-up, it means something is wrong with your BAT installation.  I recommend you going to BAT Tech help and please ollow the intruction at this link and post log.ini:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,49972.0.html

I hope it will help with crashing situation.

Hello everyone,

Recently I have been doing research on the Japanese aircraft designation system during the second world war.  I am quite surprised by what I learned.  What I realized is that, from 1920 to 1943, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service (IJNAS) used a long form of the Type and Model Number system.  From 1943 to 1945, IJNAS adopted a new, short designating system that is similar to the United States Navy system (1922 to 1962) to replace a long form of type and model number. I also learned that IJNAS (from 1931 to 1945) used "Shi" numbers designating the specification aircraft were designed for.

In IJNAS short designation system, it looks like this:

[Aircraft role name code] [Aircraft number] [Manufacturer name namecode] [variant/sub varaint]

For A6M1 as an example, 'A" is the reserved codename for Carrier-based fighter, 6 is known as 'sixth type of carrier fighter for this designation, 'M" is the reserved codename for Mitsubishi, and '1' being the first variant of A6M. That is very interesting!  For more information, you can go to this link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_military_aircraft_designation_systems#Imperial_Japanese_Army_Air_Service

On the other hand, Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAS) used the system based on year of service and type, which is similar to the IJNAS's pre-1945 long type and model number system.  As you can see, later in the era, IJAAS used "Ki"  as an abbreviation of "Kitai" which means airframe as the aircraft designation.

Looking through the historical aircraft designation, I realized this:  If I were to use only historical designation, it would be difficult for many of us to tell which aircraft it they are specifically.  For example, with IJNAS long type and model number, we wouldn't see A6M1, A6M2, etc.. until 1943 onward.  So I came up with this solution:  I am naming the aircraft list with the purpose of providing the ease of readability.  The system looks like this:

[Short designation system] / [Semi-long type and model number]

What is 'the semi-long type and model?  If I use translated English version of the long type and model number for aircraft, there would be no space left for the IJNAS short designation system of 1943 - 1944 when displayed in aircraft selection list in IL-2 1946.  so I trim out "Navy" and role of aircraft with only Type number and model.

Here is what updated aircraft list looks like (Sample) for Japanese aircraft:

NOTE: Regarding aircraft given name, if there is no official aircraft name, then it will use the nicknames given by the Japanese military.  However, if there is none of that, then the allied codename will be displayed.

A6M2a / Type 0 Model 11 Reisen, 1940
A6M2b / Type 0 Model 21 Reisen, 1941
A6M3 / Type 0 Model 21 Reisen (Late), 1943
A6M3 / Type 0 Model 22 Reisen, 1942
A6M3 / Type 0 Model 32 Reisen, 1942
A6M5a / Type 0 Model 22a Ko Reisen, 1943
A6M5 / Type 0 Model 22-KAI Reisen, 1943
A6M5 / Type 0 Model 52 Reisen (Early), 1943
A6M5 / Type 0 Model 52 Reisen, 1943
A6M5a / Type 0 Model 52a Ko Reisen, 1944
A6M5b / Type 0 Model 52b Otsu Reisen, 1944
A6M5c / Type 0 Model 52c Hei Reisen, 1944
A6M5 / Type 0 Model 54 Reisen, 1945
A6M7 / Type 0 Model 62 Reisen, 1945
A6M7 / Type 0 Model 63 Reisen, 1945

When the updated list is completed, the new version of AAL will be released as v1.7.

If there are enough requests, I might create sub-mods for AAL for fully historical aircraft names and designations for the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy aircraft.  Ideally, there could be two versions: WAW_EARLY and WAW_LATE.

Hello everyone!

Report for today:  The Imperal Japanese Army and Navy aircraft names have gone through complete overhaul with realistic names for both pre-1943 and post-1943 with short designation and semi-long designation names.

There is one fictional aircraft known as S-31 "Sora" in BAT:

Link: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,38162.0.html

I found a way to give her the more realistic 'what if' name for IJN, like I did with US Navy "what if" seaplane version of A-20.  S-31 is renamed as P1Ku1 "Sora".

According to the Aircraft type letters from this link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_military_aircraft_designation_systems#Imperial_Japanese_Navy_Air_Service

'P' means land-based bomber for Navy.  Number 1 from P1Ku1, it means the first type of land-based bomber of Navy, and "Ku" manufacturer letters for Kurowashi as 'what if' Kurowashi Aircraft Manufacturer exists.

The new updated AAL will be uploaded before Christmas hopefully.

Hello everyone,

I am continuing to study the designation system for each natino’s military besides USAAF, USN, IJA, and IJN.  I am currently studying Germany and Great British Air Force and navy designation system.  After that, will study Italy and other rest of nations.  With that growing knowledge, I will further correct any inaccurate aircraft names.
