copying game installs to another computer
« on: November 05, 2021, 02:34:26 AM »

I have been trying to copy a whole game install of DBW from one computer to another. It takes quite a while because of the size and number of files I have on one particularly good and up to date install version, some 900 000 files(!).

Anyway, I've tried using different copying programs, Windows in-built, teracopy, total commander etc. I finally do manage to copy the install to another external hard drive to hook up to another computer, but when starting up, I always hit a crash at 5%.

I was wondering if anyone knows what causes this?

I've searched for the causes of a 5% crash but haven't found anything.

I used an external HDD and copied everything as is and it worked without issue (Win 8 to Win 10,C drive installation to D drive). IL-2 doesn't make any changes to the registry, so a copy to a new PC should be straight forward.

Make sure you didn't miss any files and everything is included in the file transfer (when I tried using my FTP server, it dropped some files because of non-English characters).

Copying from one disk (or computer) to another disk (or computer) is not a problem...
The only thing to check is the settings of the video and sound configurations.
So check the conf.ini !

Oh, that I've done in this instance of trying to copy and then start up. All the setting are OK. I was just trying to copy from an internal hard disk to an external hard disk and then try starting the game on both.

I think I tried some 4 times, but each time I get a 5% crash when i try to start the copied game. The original game works fine, but not the copied one.

Of course I have other copies of default DBW installs, but getting a game up to the latest mods can take some time.

One or more important files are corrupted after the transfer... ?   !   ?

5% crash is usually files.sfs.
Maybe you've followed our guides to share sfs archives between different game installations using Symbolic Links - and these didn't get copied physically, but with a link pointing nowhere now (just a wild guess).

This I shall have to look into. Symbolic link?

Anyway, I've copied Il-2 installs dozens and dozens of times with other install versions and no prob. But now i know the prob lies with sfs files, that might help me narrow it down in this particular instance. I spent some 2 months updating the version and I wanted to transfer it to a more high end pc.

tnx

!!!  8)

Files.sfs download:

I've copied my Il-2 back and forth between my PCs so often and never had a problem!

I had already copied with USB HDDs, with USB sticks and for a few years only with SSDs.

I wish you luck...!
